Album Notes: Personnel includes: Patty Griffin (vocals, guitar, finger cymbals); Emmylou Harris (vocals); Doug Lancio (electric & 12-string guitar, mandolin); Brian Standefer (cello); Michael Ramos (accordion); John Deaderick (piano); Giles Reaves (vibraphone, drums, djembe, bells); Dave Jaques (bass).
Album Reviews: Rolling Stone (5/9/02, p.76) - 3.5 out of 5 stars - "...[Griffin's] songs are bone-simple, her lyrics come off like snapshots of the Dust Bowl, and her aching, slightly twangy singing is unapologetically old-fashioned..."
...Patty has progressed too much since her last album to let this slip by because it's not as familiar as the last album. If you give it a chance you will re-discover her and feel the same way you felt when you first discovered her. If you are just discovering Patty with the Flaming Red CD, then you may want to have a listen to Living with Ghosts. You'll see exactly what I mean. Country fans may also want to check out the new Martina McBride and Dixie Chicks CDs who do incredible folk-country covers of "Goodbye" and "Let Him Fly" respectively....

Advantages: Enjoyable songs with a country/rock feel, no really poor tracks, good value. Disadvantages: Not to everyone taste.
...And so here we have Mrs Springsteen, doing it for herself! I searched high and low for this CD which came out in 1993, and finally had to order it in. I felt that this couldn't have helped sales at the time, but then I might have missed the initial release!

I used to change the words to "I wish I had a Turkey Burger!" I know, don't say it… off her trolley! Ok! - no comments on junk food either please! I can't even see why I thought the lyrics sounded anything like it now!
Anyway, the kids joined in and cleared their plates! I thought the song was very catchy, and wanted to hear more of her music, hence my ordering the CD in. That must mean it was memorable!
Patti Scialfa...

Advantages: Passionate debut Disadvantages: nothin' comes to mind
...The first time I came across Patti Smith was on the B.B.C. 2 music show “The Old Grey Whistle Test”, I can’t remember the year but I think it was round the middle of the 70’s.
I remember she was strangely dressed for being on stage, wearing a big coat and hat on stage. I thought strange what’s all this about and then she proceeded to perform the track “Land” which is in 3 parts, horses, land of a 1,000 dances and La mer (de) nothing could have prepared me for the all out assault on the senses that Ms Smith performed.
The performance that I witnessed was incredible; she was jumping up and down, throwing herself around the floor and this was for the full length of the song and runs at nearly 10 minutes long.
After watching this on T.V. I thought to myself I got to get a copy of this album...
