1990's39/SmoothLP) was a strong indicator of things to come for Green Day. Recorded on shoestring budgets, these recordings out-rocked most of the wannabe punk records that flooded record stores at the time. From the first strains of the opener, "At the Library", Green Day are off on a fast, fun ride. Some of the band's best tracks are from these early sessions--"Don't Leave Me", "Dry Ice", "16", "Rest", and "Paper Lanterns", to name only a few. It's a hook-filled record with three-chord wonders at every turn, anchored by Armstrong's snotty-boy vocals. He captures youthful yearning, variously spitting lyrics like "I feel forgotten / Feel like rotting" and then musing out loud, "What is it about you that I adore?" GREEN DAY - 1039/SMOOTHED OUT SLAPPY HOURS -------------------------------------------
Green Day have been one of my favourite bands for quite some time now, since I first heard 'Basket Case' and 'Longview', from 1994's 'Dookie' album.
These singles really took Green Day to the top of the charts and into multi platinum sales, with Dookie being one of the highest selling albums in years. The band has released a total of 8 albums, two of these are best of collections. The band is probably most famous for its singles such as 'Basket Case', 'Time of your life' and 'Minority'.
What a lot of people don't realize is that the band had been going for quite some years before the mainstream smash albums.
In fact the band formed in the mid 80's, when teenage school friends Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt decided to form a band. They were originally known as 'Sweet Children', but in 1989 the band changed their name, and the rest is history.
The band were heavily influenced by local bands such as Mr T Experience and Operation Ivy, whilst also being inspired by bands such as The Replacements and the Beatles.
Before the band joined a major label where they released the classic Dookie and later albums, the group was on the small indie label, Lookout Records, home of many great punk bands such as Mr T Experience and Operation Ivy.
This was their first album,released in 1990, which consists of two Eps, 1000 hours and Slappy ep, it also has their first full length LP, 39/smooth.

The band consists of.
Billie Joe Armstrong - Guitar and Vocals. Mike Dirnt - Bass. Al Sobrante (John Kiffmeyer) - Drums.
After the release of this album, John left to go to college and also joined a few small punk bands. He was replaced by Tre Cool, who is still the drummer to this day.
THE ALBUM ---------
This album is 19 tracks long, so im not going to do a full track by track review, or you would all get bored! Ill just give a few of the best and worst on offer. The album clocks in at 56 minutes, which offers good value for money.
--AT THE LIBRARY--
The first thing you notice with the opening track, is the sound quality isn't quite what we've come to expect from this great band, but then again it was recorded for about 400 dollars, and this doesn't distract from the great tunes on offer such as this one.
Opening with a nice fast paced chuggy little riff, it gives a good idea of what is to come for the rest of the album. With some nice simple pop type guitar sounds and the kicking drumming by John, this has a real bouncy feel. The vocals have a quite nasally sound to them, but never too much that it annoys you.
This song really shows the talent that the band has, and is a great view of the early raw talent.
--DONT LEAVE ME--
This opens with a quite rocking riff, which is a bit harder than most of the others on offer.
The drums hold a fairly nice beat, although John doesn't seem to have quite as much talent as the later drummer Tre Cool.
The one main downfall of this track is the lack of a real chorus, this is basically just Billie singing one line a couple of times and calling it a chorus, but the album cant all be good!
--DISAPPEARING BOY--
This is like a very early blue print for the music on the Dookie album, with some great driving guitars and solid drumming, the bass line is also top notch.
Opening with a simple little riff, with the vocals kicking in almost instantly.
The song boasts a very catchy chorus, with backing vocals provided by Mike, in all the right places. The song shows Billie giving a fair bit of emotion in his voice,
--GREEN DAY--
This song named after the band is a very bass and drum driven tune, with Johns drum playing really bringing the track into another level completely.
Another fast paced tune, with another top quality chorus, which wont fail to get you singing.
Other than that the tune is quite similar to what has been heard already. But still good.
--GOING TO PASALACQUA--
This is one of the stand out songs on this collection, and really shows that the band always had the talent to make the big time.
This is still a stable part of their live sets, and sits nicely next to all the top 10 hits, which shows how good it is.
Another fast tune, with a catchy guitar tune driving you through the song, with Billie singing one of his best choruses to date.

This song is quite similar in style to 'When i come around' from dookie, with its catchy crunchy riff, the tune is not overly fast, which offers a bit of a change from most of the other offerings.
The vocals are top notch as usual, with some nice link ups between Billie and Mike during the verses.
--THE JUDGES DAUGHTER--
Another of my favourites, this is just pure pop punk, with everything you want from this sort of song.
The tune is made up of a simple 3 chord guitar progression, which although very simple is nonetheless extremely catchy.
Billie's vocals are sung at quite a fast pace and offer a lot of melody to the track.
Billie even gets the chance to stick a little guitar solo in the middle of the song which normally I don't like, but on this one it works just right.
--KNOWLEDGE--
This is a cover of a track by label mates Operation Ivy, who were later to become major band Rancid.
This song tacks the original track, which was a fast rocking number, and changes it to an almost easy listening type tune, it sounds like the band had a lot of fun recording it, and it shouldn't be taken too seriously.
--1000 HOURS--
Another top tune, which wouldn't seem out of place on one of their later albums. A lovely little tune, with lyrics about Billie's love for a girl lasting forever.
This is one of those tunes that anyone would like, it isn't offensive, it isn't too loud and it has a lovely little melody playing through it.
Almost worth buying the album for alone.
--THE ONE I WANT--
Another nice love song, which has a nice riff playing throughout.
Billies vocals show a nice amount of emotion, and make you feel what he feels.
The music is fairly simple, with the bass and drums holding a fairly simple back up for the main guitar sections. This is another one of those songs that the vocals add to the melody and overall sound.
OVERALL --------
Although this isn't as instant as some of the bands later offerings, it still contains some true gems. Well worth a listen if your a fan of the band or are new to the whole pop punk genre and want to hear some of the best early bands.
This album is due to be re-released early in 2004 with remastered sound and a few extra tracks and demos, so it might be better to leave it until then, and buy one of the later albums to tide you over.
If you like this band then you should check out some of the other bands on Lookout Records, most notably Mr T Experience. Fans should also check out Pinhead Gunpowder, Billie's side project, also on Lookout records.
This album should only cost around 10 pounds, and is available from most decent record stores, or you could buy it online from the lookout records website.

Advantages: A classic Green Day album Disadvantages: Certainly not their best - a few weak tracks
OK, one last Green Day album! Due to a strange twist of fate, it’ll be Green Day’s first album that I’m reviewing last! 1,039 / Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, as strange a name as it may seem, was made up from the songs that appeared on the EPs 39/Smooth, Slappy, Flipside “The Big One” and 1,000 Hours. See, now the name makes sense! The album was released in 1990, making it 14 years old at the time of writing. One thing worth nothing, is something that ... ...back cover, “*knowledge by Op. IV.” is scribbled. Most people would probably ignore it, but it seems to me that “Op. IV.” is probably referring to the band Operation Ivy, which I think is one of Mike or Billie Joe’s side bands or former bands.

The Green Day line-up was different on this record Tre Cool hadn't yet joined, so drums where provided by John Keftimeyer, who is not as naturally gifted as Tre, but is a capable drummer. John left after this album to go to college, and missed out on Green Day going huge. AT THE LIBRARY This gets the album of to a great start, a simple riff with a great bassline. It's a song about unrequited love, seeing someone you like, but not having the courage ... ...go away so you could ask them at a better time, and then when you're ready, it's too late. DON'T LEAVE ME Another simple riff, with a more pronounced bassline on this track. It's a short song about how far he'll go to hang on to his girlfriend. Mike's backing vocals really drive this song along well. I WAS THERE Is the first really outstanding song on the album, with a great drumbeat and another great bass, the guitar is slightly quieter, all moving ...

I remember at the eve of me going to high school, my sister gave me a little speach. As I was entering my first year there, she was entering her final one, she gave me a rundown of basically an entire high-school life in a nutshell, the part that always stuck with me was about third and fourth year. "you will become an a**e, it's unavoidable, it happens to us all. If there is one period in your life that you will look back upon and regret acting ... ...those two years. Old, simple magic Review of1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours - Green Dayby

WQhen I first purchased this album I felt a little let down as I had previously bought 'Dookie' and this did not seem to compare. After giving it a chance I was certainly rewarded as I now feel that this really is a very good album. The guitar work in this album is more complex than that of the more up-to-date albums and the soloing sounds somewhat more impressive. I would say that the main highlights on this album have to be 'Paper Lanterns', 'Going ... ...'Why do you want him?' was a beautiful solo in it which makes you wonder how Billie Joe could write such a good songs when he was just 12 and had not written one before ever. '16' if listened to carefully you will notice that during the verses the guitar tune is very similar to that of 'When I Come Around'.
'Going to Pasalaqua' is a favourite of theirs to play at gigs and it understandable as it is catchy and fast. The album itself is a real achievement ...

Better than Dookie Review of1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours - Green Dayby

I am a big Green Day fan, and for me to be a "big" fan of something it takes alot of convincing. I started listening to GD after "dookie" (as did everyone else), but when i heard 39/smooth, i fell in love. the lyrics are written like a modern day Shakespear, the compolation and arrangment of guitars and drums will blow your mind. You also must remember that the guys were only around the age of 16 when they recorded this album. it deals w/ all the ... ...bordom and any other obstacal a teenage boy goes through. It helped me when i was 16 and i still listen to it almost more often than their other albums. A must get!! The album costs about $16 and is worth every cent. The songs range from emotional to heartfelt and there's even a cover song from a very well-known punk band :Operation Ivy. The guitars are very well thought out and the complete sound of this (their first album) is so much more complacated ...

...! No distortion on the guitars ? it?s punk style, but it?s played on acoustic guitars!! Different, but f*ck me it works! (Ooh, my first Ciao swearword. Two years, not bad ? had to come out sooner or later ;-)) A great song ? has to be listened to. Classic GreenDay, but with acoustic guitars! Genius!
13 ? Sweet Children
Sweet Children was GreenDay?s band name before it was GreenDay. Ironically enough, on the 1,039/SmoothedOutSlappyHours album, they have a song called GreenDay, which they wrote when the band was called Sweet Children!!! A good song, but not the strongest.
14 ? Best Thing In Town
Written by Billie Joe about a girl he thinks is the best thing in town. Another good song, but not the greatest. One to avoid unless you?re a big GreenDay fan.

...Mnay people may not agree with my opinion but I believe that at the moment they are the best band around and have been for some time now. I also hope they will continue to be for some time now.
My fav. GreenDay album is Insomniac. It is their fourth album out. Most people tend to say that Dookie is their best album and it is the most popular. When I first started listening to GreenDay it was my favourite album that was out. Now my fav is Insomniac. This is because it is so much harder and faster than all of their other albums. The guitar playing in it is excellent.
There best songs on it are Geek stink breath, brain stew and walking contradiction.
Other GreenDay albums include; 1,039/smoothedoutslappyhours, Kerplunk, Dookie, Nimrod and Warning.
I would also advise anyone to go and see them live because they have so...

...GreenDay have just released their new 'Best Of' album, but to be honest its reaaally not. Its pretty poor. If it was really a best of album they should have bought the rights off LookOut records for Kerplunk and 1039SmoothedOutSlappyHours. Ok, so I guess, the Superhits album isnt that bad, but if you want to get a GreenDay album, it has to be Nimrod.
A sublime line up of 18 awesome songs. Every one of these songs different, and yet every song also has that awesome GreenDay feel to it. Not only this, but every song seems to be a classic, whether it be, Hitchin A Ride, Redundant, Time of your life or The Grouch, if you think you like punk rock, after listening to this, you will LOVE it.
