18 [VINYL] - Moby
Admittedly,18isn't a million style miles away from its predecessor, but this can only be a ... more
good thing. If it ain't broke (and let's face it,Playwas a pretty hole-free record all told), then don't fix it. Hence the dominance here of Moby's heartbreaking way with strings, pianos and those sampled gospel vocals he's so cleverly made his own."In My Heart" is familiar territory: a mournful blues voice sat astride the epic swell of military drums and tear jerking symphonia, while further tales of love gone bad surface on the bass-driven "One of These Mornings" and the subtle house simmer of "Another Woman". Is there anyone else out there that can do grief you can dance to? Thankfully "We Are All Made of Stars" does shed a little optimism, and there are some cool collaborations here too. Sinead O'Connor lends fragile breath to "Harbour" while MC Lyte and Angie Stone bring sassiness to the funky hip-hop anthem, "Jam for the Ladies". Welcome back, little man. --Claude Walls

Moby "18" is the follow up to "Play", the highly acclaimed and well received album . In fact it went platinum in many countries ! I already had this album , and enjoy it still ! I wanted to know if the next album could come up trumps and I wasnt let down !
Released in 2002 , A year on, I feel "18" needs a much needed opinion , as it seems to the have the same qualities as " Play" . Again consistency throughout the album is the key to it's appeal .
I bought this album from woolies last year on its release at the price of £13.99. Although also available through the website www.cd-wow.com , currently at the price of 8.99 !
The album sports a cover depicting Moby dressed in a blue spacesuit complete with helmet, on what looks like a desolate planet!
On closer inspection the cd contains 18 tracks ,with an inlay of more pictures of Moby in similar circumstances. There is also an essay on mobys thoughts and beliefs and how it influenced his choices in making this cd. Something he takes seriously .
The tracks themselves are a good mixture of old style Moby meets new , with the familiar instrumental strings, beats, samples and on this cd gospel thrown in as the main feature!
So here is the order of play ,
1. We are all made of stars - is the first track and was the first single it has a chugging beat with Mobys vocals and guitar riff. The idea of people coming together is the main theme on this track .
2. In this world - my favourite track has a ladys gospel voice with a nice beat and strings, also quite sad ! Again a single .
3. In my heart - is an uplifting song again with gospel connections , piano riff throughout and uptempo , quite repetitive but is a joy to listen to.
4. Great Escape - Slow, short piece with haunting ladys vocal and cello instrument, quite melancholic.
5. Signs of love - Mobys voice , "I fly so high and fall so low".
6. One of these mornings - Slow and lamenting with beat, lady singing about leaving .
7. Another woman - Strong bass and beat , woman sings about her partners infedility! "you have another woman somewhere around and I know , said I know" !
8. Fireworks - Calming and restful instrumental piece with flute , piano and strings. Great for meditation .
9. Extreme ways - Moby sings of the troubles he has experienced and seen , with a beat and stringed background.
10. Jam for the ladies - Another strong bass line and beat to this . Great for a groove!
11. Sunday (The day before my birthday) - Sweet tune ,with a gentle beat , lady sings with a lament about the loss of her love, piano riff throughout.
12. 18 - Another lovely tune , instrumental with piano and strings , very calming influence. Again nice to rest to.
13. Sleep alone - Moby laments in this and is quite a slow piece. Probably the track Im most likely to skip .
14. At least we tried - A lady sings with melancholy about love .
15. Harbour - The longest track on the cd , with the vocal talents of Sinead o conner , haunting tune with strings .
16. Look back in - Another instrumental with strings , very reflective and calming . Quite short .
17. The rafters - Very uplifting , very uptempo and very gospel , relentless and gets you up and going!
18 . Im not worried at all - Slow rock with male gospel voice , A nice and thoughtful conclusion to this album!
Since getting this cd, its must be one I have played the most times , I find it a good mixture of uptempo, restful and uplifting tracks. Something to fit all kinds of moods . I shall listen out for further recordings of this artist , who seems to jump genres with ease ! It also can reach a fairly wide audience! Very worthwhile getting and playable , it doesnt tire or date like some albums do . Again like "Play", its predecessor , it is a good buy I believe.

...This is a good album that i think that everyone should have, if you like moby this is a very good album.
All of the music has been made by moby in his home and he plays all the musical instruments.
this album is different to his other albums like "play" and "18", this is beacuse moby has decided to use his own voice more. this a mixture of more disco and rave sounds.
Hotel is worth buying to see the way that Moby has changed his style of music.

...According to Moby, "In addition to these 18 songs there are another 200 that were written for the album that didn't make it on."
Why is the album called Play? "Because there's a playground near my house with a huge mural that says PLAY and it looks very nice. And it's a short name that fits the design motif. In his February 1999 update, Moby adds that "There are some other more esoteric reasons", but he has yet to elaborate on them.
So what does it sound like? "The album is good, if I dare say so myself," Moby says. "Much more down tempo than previous stuff. Why this is I don't know. It just sort of ended up that way." Fans and critics alike are giving it high praise. In fact, Spin magazine has chosen it as one of the top records of the 1990s!
If you want a preview of the type of music that's on the album, check out the Honey...

Advantages: Electric mixes of music. Disadvantages: none. Great to have in any colelction of all musical types.
...Well there is a valid reason why this is the album of the year! It is simply outstanding! Moby provides his listeners with an electric mix and fusion of all great sounds along with deep pure emotions to leave you amazed and hooked. The cd can psyche you up or alternatively sooth you, depending on your mood, the track and the moment. Some special songs include "Natural Blues", "Porcelain" and "Honey". The mix of folk music rhytm, piano's keyboards and a techno beat really sums up Moby's usic, but added with something special, his personality and emotions just envelop themselves into the music. There are 18 great songs, and I dont expect you to love them all or fall head over heels in love with them, but there will be defintely some you're immediately attracted to and some whee you will see the beautiful side when you're least expecting it...

Album Notes: Personnel includes: Moby (vocals, various instruments); Jennifer Price, Azure Ray, Dianne McCauley, Angie Stone, MC Lyte, Freedom Bremner, Sinead O'Connor, Shauna & Lorraine Phillips, The Shining Light Gospel Choir (vocals). Includes liner notes by Moby. "18" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Continuing to deliver the kind of soulful electronica with an ethereal sheen that made PLAY such a breakthrough album for him, Moby keeps the good vibrations going on the equally engaging follow-up 18. Having previously drawn from such disparate sources as subtle dance beats and samples of African-American spirituals, it's not surprising that this devout Christian once again looked to the church for recruits. This time around the talents of The Shining Light Gospel Choir (the revival-like "I'm Not Worried At All" and the sweeping "In My Heart") and the recently ordained Sinead O'Connor (the lush "Harbour") get tapped. Moby avoids making 18 a strictly austere affair by throwing some beats onto the barbie in the shape of the thumping Angie Stone/M.C. Lyte collaboration "Jam For The Ladies" and the subtle cut-and-paste funk of "Sunday (The Day Before My Birthday)." Moby does a fine job manning the mike himself for the striking '80s-style electro-pop meditation "We Are All Made Of Stars" and the equally gorgeous soundscape "Signs Of Love." Ever the sonic chef, Moby has once again succeeded in whipping together a collection of songs that are the musical equivalent of comfort food.
