Moby "18" is the follow up to "Play", the highly acclaimed and well received album . In fact it went platinum in many countries ! I already had this album , and enjoy it still ! I wanted to know if the next album could come up trumps and I wasnt let down !
Released in 2002 , A year on, I feel "18" needs a much needed opinion , as it seems to the have the same qualities as " Play" . Again consistency throughout the album is the key to it's appeal .
I bought this album from woolies last year on its release at the price of £13.99. Although also available through the website www.cd-wow.com , currently at the price of 8.99 !
The album sports a cover depicting Moby dressed in a blue spacesuit complete with helmet, on what looks like a desolate planet!
On closer inspection the cd contains 18 tracks ,with an inlay of more pictures of Moby in similar circumstances. There is also an essay on mobys thoughts and beliefs and how it influenced his choices in making this cd. Something he takes seriously .
The tracks themselves are a good mixture of old style Moby meets new , with the familiar instrumental strings, beats, samples and on this cd gospel thrown in as the main feature!
So here is the order of play ,
1. We are all made of stars - is the first track and was the first single it has a chugging beat with Mobys vocals and guitar riff. The idea of people coming together is the main theme on this track .
2. In this world - my favourite track has a ladys gospel voice with a nice beat and strings, also quite sad ! Again a single .
3. In my heart - is an uplifting song again with gospel connections , piano riff throughout and uptempo , quite repetitive but is a joy to listen to.
4. Great Escape - Slow, short piece with haunting ladys vocal and cello instrument, quite melancholic.
5. Signs of love - Mobys voice , "I fly so high and fall so low".
6. One of these mornings - Slow and lamenting with beat, lady singing about leaving .
7. Another woman - Strong bass and beat , woman sings about her partners infedility! "you have another woman somewhere around and I know , said I know" !
8. Fireworks - Calming and restful instrumental piece with flute , piano and strings. Great for meditation .
9. Extreme ways - Moby sings of the troubles he has experienced and seen , with a beat and stringed background.
10. Jam for the ladies - Another strong bass line and beat to this . Great for a groove!
11. Sunday (The day before my birthday) - Sweet tune ,with a gentle beat , lady sings with a lament about the loss of her love, piano riff throughout.
12. 18 - Another lovely tune , instrumental with piano and strings , very calming influence. Again nice to rest to.
13. Sleep alone - Moby laments in this and is quite a slow piece. Probably the track Im most likely to skip .
14. At least we tried - A lady sings with melancholy about love .
15. Harbour - The longest track on the cd , with the vocal talents of Sinead o conner , haunting tune with strings .
16. Look back in - Another instrumental with strings , very reflective and calming . Quite short .
17. The rafters - Very uplifting , very uptempo and very gospel , relentless and gets you up and going!
18 . Im not worried at all - Slow rock with male gospel voice , A nice and thoughtful conclusion to this album!
Since getting this cd, its must be one I have played the most times , I find it a good mixture of uptempo, restful and uplifting tracks. Something to fit all kinds of moods . I shall listen out for further recordings of this artist , who seems to jump genres with ease ! It also can reach a fairly wide audience! Very worthwhile getting and playable , it doesnt tire or date like some albums do . Again like "Play", its predecessor , it is a good buy I believe.
