Advantages: Classic pop; hidden gems Disadvantages: No really big hits; lots of saxophone!
...liked.
After this album was released at the end of 1998, Bowie was reeling from the critical mauling his last studio album, Earthling, received. Made up of frenetic drum n bass rhythms and dance structures, the album was a commercial failure. He regrouped and between 1999 and 2003 plugged his guitar back in to deliver three back to form albums in the shape of Hours, Heathen and last year's Reality.

The voice of an angel Review ofOnly Yesterday (Richard & Karen Carpenter's Greatest Hits) - Carpenters (The)by

Advantages: poetry in motion , songs for lovers it true. Disadvantages: set such a high standard , none can equal
...on at least one other occasion under a new name - a great marketing ploy eh ). , and to which this op is really all about , so hear goes....>
So what’s on this album then , well for starters 20 tracks , almost all of which you would recognise if played , even if you don’t like to admit it ! And they are :
1) ‘Yesterday Once More’ - 1973 > a classic
2) ‘Superstar’ - 1971 > catchy
3) ‘Rainy Days and Mondays’ - 1971> haunting
4) ‘Top Of The World’ - 1972 > poptastic while being funky
5) ‘Ticket to Ride’ - 1969 > much better than the Beatles version
6) ‘Goodbye To Love’ - 1972 > ode to the broken hearted
7) ‘This Maquerade’ - 1973 > mellow babe !
8) ‘Hurting Each Other’ - 1972 > reflective mood but some...
9) ‘Solitair’ - 1975 > even Sedaka recognises this as sheer beauty
10) ‘We’ve Only Just Begun’ - 1970 > so apt , so true
11) ‘Those Good Old...

Considering that the Charisma label was responsible for some of the most esoteric progressive rock releases in the 70's and my own feeling that progressive rock is going to make a big comeback this year, hopefully without Yes it seems like good business sense.
Way back in 1972 VDGG split up due to the pressures of touring which had sent the band a little potty, not surprising when you read the tales about what happened to them on the Italian tours. In the period between 1972 and their reformation in 1975, front man Peter Hammill had released a few solo records all of which featured members of VDGG. So...
