Packaged in a magnetically-sealed silver case, Ash’s second album arrived like an artefact sent back from the future. It sounded like it too, bending and twisting its sonic material like organic liquid metal, as if the whole album had been put through tube screamer, flanger, and phaser pedals all set to highest intensity. There are delicate moments, like the poignant Folk Song and the aching I’m Gonna Fall, but the heavier tunes create a sci-fi apocalypse that could well be the sound of rock ‘n’ roll in the 21st century. It’s a massive step forward from debut 1977, with less oddball jangly pop like Girl From Mars and more full on spacy rock nubbins. Buy it or be behind the times!
