1987/Slip Of The Tongue - Whitesnake

Advantages: a good mix of ballads and hard rock tunes
Disadvantages: not everyones cup of tea

...David Coverdale's Whitesnake brings us a fantastic mix of blues and rock. Great ballads like Sailing ships and Deaper The Love, heavy rock tunes like Slide it in, Slip of the tongue, kittens got claws to name just a few. On this album David asked Steve Vai to play lead guitars, the latin american instrumental seven string axe wizzard sertainly does play some mean guitar solos and melodies. Steve Vai and Adrian Vandenburg sertainly made this a very enjoyable album. Look out for Steve Vai Sex And Religion album, which has the Whitesnake lads as guests. Whitesnake is not everyones cup of tea but I would put this album as one of the best Whitesnake albums to date. Although david does have a good voice, a few times he screams especialy on the song slip of the tongue. A great variety of very good songs and guitar solos. A must buy... Read review

Advantages: Amazing vocals, lyrics and guitar work.

...I am a huge Whitesnake fan, and always keen to remind people that Rock music isn't all earache and shouting down a microphone! Whitesnake was started by a gorgeous Yorkshire lad David Coverdale in the early 70's, after he left Deep Purple as lead vocalist. Due to conflicts within the band Coverdale decided it was time for something new and Whitesnake was born. From their first album Whitesnake have given us a good mix between Blues and Rock, but commerciality didn't really hit until the album Slide it in. The Greatest Hits album takes tracks from 3 previous albums the afore mentioned Slide it In, 1987, and Slip of the Tongue, as well as remakes from the very early albums such as Saints and Sinners and Lovehunter. Advantages: Good time rock'n'roll with a large drop of blues added for good measure
Disadvantages: Very samey with lyrics that are sometimes hideous

....  Much better than when I went to see them in Newcastle following the release of their album '1987' which was just full of American posturing and showing off which, to me, just went to show that David Coverdale had now left his roots behind and had taken up residence in the big-hair hotel with fancy trousers and highlights on his bonnet. Whitesnake back in those early 80's were very much a blues/rock band with plenty of slide guitar and smoky vocals and a far cry from the band who perform under the moniker today.  There was none of that 'look at us aren't we great' poncing about on stage just six musicians playing honest rock 'n' roll backing Coverdale with his tongue (or something) firmly lodged in his cheek and a wry smile upon his lips.   ...
