Strapping Young Lad - City! Overrated?

Advantages: Different
Disadvantages: Too much going on

This is a review of City, the 2nd album of Strapping Young Lad the Canadian Progressive/Extreme metal band. This album is often critically acclaimed as the best work of Strapping Young Lad, to add to that Devin Townsend is often cited as a genius. Made in 1997, the album should appeal to me but doesn't impress me anyway near as much as it should do, I've tried to get into it several times and the mixture of different styles messes it up a bit for me. I'm also not a big fan of the "clean" vocals, some songs on the album like Detox are pretty good but others like Oh My F***ing God just sound like progressive industrial metal with a muffled sound that represents a result similar to a heavier version of what Mike Patton is up to these days (if you've seen it), which is basically just making a racket! Review of City - Strapping Young Lad

The Likely Lads as young lads

Advantages: Genuinely funny
Disadvantages: Episodes missing, poor quality

on television between 1964 and 1966, which featured Bob and Terry in their younger and freer days, although still set in the same area, somewhere in the northeast of England. There were three series of The Likely Lads; unfortunately, most of the episodes went missing. The seven that still exist are shown on this DVD. James Bolam is truly amazing as Terry. Cynical and sarcastic, Terry is the leader of the two lads - it is his one-liners that get all the laughs - often not because what he says is funny, but because of the way that he says it, managing to keep at straight face at the same time. Of course, the writers deserve some credit, but I really think it is James Bolam's comic abilities that helped make this show the success that it was. The Young Ones DVD - Series 1

Advantages: Awesome episodes - a classic t.v. sitcom produced to be as the original was
Disadvantages: not sharper image, no extras

The DVD is a simple set up and plays striaght on to the episodes, you can select play all, or view one by one. It contains the whole of series one of the young ones. The episodes are as follows; 1. Demolition. This is the first one ever and we see an intro duction to all the characters, including the landlord who has various other roles throughout the series. The basic plot appart from setting up and introducing characters is that the guys are living in their accomodation they have done for some time when one day they recieve a letter from the council informing them that their house is to be demolished. Naturally Vyvyan throws a tantrum and decides to beat them to the job ...
