This was the album that shot Prince into the big time and into my heart all because of one of the century's most played songs ~ the excellent '1999', which is still as fresh as the day it was born.
This album is truly brilliant and showed the first real signs that Prince was going to become a megastar, the CD goes from the funky 'Delirious' to the sophisticated 'Something In The Water' and of course everybody knows 'Little Red Corvette.
'Lady Cab Driver' is one of his most gorgeous of songs, makes me go all weak at the knees, phew!
Prince shows a stunning display of raw talent in this album, not wallowing indulgence which he has been accused of doing. If you're listening to '1999' there is something about the 1980's that pops up every time, really experimental kind of funk and hip-hop.
But I reckon all of his songs are equally addictive. It's definitely among Prince's best work and is a must for any record collection.
Advantages: The Golden Age Disadvantages: Side Of The Road
...This is the fifth major label album by LA-born musical magpie and icon, Beck Hansen. Hot on the heels of 1999's Prince like funk 'Midnite Vultures', produced by Radiohead knob twiddler Nigel Godrich. This follows on where 'Mutations' left off. The soft simplicity broods across what has been billed his "break-up album", with the emotion left wide open.
Lyrically more direct than he usually is, but still as inventive with his word play.
1. The Golden Age
All muted 70's drums and accoustic guitar. Beautiful melodies and lyrics with a slight Gram Parsons influence. 9/10
2. Paper Tiger
Swooping bollywood strings over electric guitar and eastern percussion. Again beautiful melodies and lyrics with his voice sounding richer than ever. 9/10
3. Guess I'm Doin' Fine
This track finds a lonesome Beck crooning over slide guitar...

...You For The Music" on the B side, nor does it include "The Girl With The Golden Hair"
The album sleeve is adequate but like many nowadays does not contain song lyrics.
Some ABBA facts:
Anni-Frid Lyngstad (who is the brunette vocalist) is now known as Anni-Frid, Princess Reuss von Plauen through her marriage to Prince Heinrich Ruzzo Reuss von Plauen who sadly passed away in 1999.
In 1979 The United Nations declared it the year of the child and ABBA kindly donated all royalties from sales of "Chiquitita" to this cause.
Björn Ulvaeus, born in 1945, now suffers from some severe memory loss. I'm sure all ABBA and other music fans wish him well.
Russian premier Vladimir Putin is said to be a big fan of ABBA tribute band Bjorn Again, however, in January 2009 Russian officials denied that he was in attendance at a gig that the tribute band...

Additional notes
Album Notes: Personnel: Prince (vocals, various instruments); Dez (vocals, guitar); Lisa Coleman, Wendy Melvoin, J.J. (vocals). Recorded at Sunset Sound & Uptown, Los Angeles, California. With the release of this seminal double-album, Prince evolves from the minimalist synth-pop that powered such discs as DIRTY MIND and CONTROVERSY into the pop genius that defined such quirky masterpieces as PURPLE RAIN and SIGN OF THE TIMES. Were it only for the hits--the loopy bounce of "Delirious," the moody slide of "Little Red Corvette," and the irresistible title track (only Prince could have written the ultimate dance song for the turn of the millennium 18 years before the fact)--1999 would be essential. These tracks are as perfect as they are familiar from incessant radio play. The rest of 1999 holds up to the radio hits. Loose, nasty grooves like "D.M.S.R." and "Automatic" are interspersed with the propulsive shuffle of "Let's Pretend We're Married" and the soulful, psychedelic pulse of "Something In The Water." This is not average dance music. Prince's hybrid of rich, trippy atmospherics, '80s synth-y keyboard sounds, lush, asymmetrical harmonies, elements of rock guitar, soulful singing, and strong songwriting--all rolled together with beats--weaves dark, sexual energy into ebullient boogie anthems. 1999 is one of the definitive pop music documents of the '80s.
