... From then I made it my mission to seek out this talented voice and buy her debut, 19.
OK, so it's not as edgy as Winehouse's 'Frank', and lyrically doesn't match Amy's cutting, street-savvy lyrics, but her voice is quite incredible. Raspy and soulful, she's like a warm tub of honey with ... Read review

hard to corroborate it in your mind. London singer-songwriter Adele's debut album is titled 19, referencing her age, and there are hints it's true--its themes are almost exclusively concerned with young love's highs and (mostly) lows and there's a clipped estuary English tide-mark to her voice, allying her with the fresh-faced modern female songwriting guard; Lily Allen, Kate Nash, et al. But the sheer weight of her maturity--vocally, emotionally and in overall poiseÂ?really reduces that all to circumstantial evidence. Adele is carrying something much bigger here, you can't help but be consumed by it on "Daydreamer" with it's jazzy tip-toeing guitar and elastic vocal range and "Hometown Glory" with its deep, lonely piano serving as a bed for the raw emotional undressing that takes place above it. Draw a line between timeless, powerful singers like Ella Fitzgerald and the modern standard of Amy Winehouse; Adele balances and pirouettes confidently along that tightrope. Winehouse particularly informs the likes of "Cold Shoulder" and double-bass heavy "Best for Last", and that's not an alignment that's ever going to be easy to realise credibly. Needless to say, she does, with ease. On future classic "Chasing Pavements" she also gives a nonsensical phrase a handful of heart in lieu of meaning and when you can pull that off convincingly you know you're in possession of something special. Who dares to dream what bigger numbers could bring. --James Berry

Advantages: Good, all rounder. Disadvantages: If you don't like a soul/jazz/pop combo, eat elsewhere.

I love that her image isn't 'the norm' and that she hasn't (yet) been tainted by the media hype. She comes across in her music as a wholesome, good humoured, girl-next-door ... ...by a 19 year old (with a particularly mature voice). Ok, so some of it's a bit too pop-sheen for my personal taste, but when she pulls it off so well, I can't help but join the masses on this one.
Stand-out tracks: Chasing Pavements; My Same; Hometown Glory. ...

Advantages: great first album Disadvantages: seems a little rushed in recording it
When I bought this album I thought she was going to be a bit like Kate Nash, but she is not Adele has her own very unique style, a lot more soul and a bit jazzy at times. Adele has a unique voice as it's unlike most other recording artists, the only person that I think she sounds like is Amy Winehouse and their music styles are slightly different.
If you have only heard chasing pavements, don't judge the album on that, because she has a better variety ... ...There are five amazing songs on this album these are Chasing Pavements, Daydreams, Best For Last, Hometown Glory and Cold Shoulder.
What's more Adele wrote all of the lyrics on the album she also wrote most of the music for the songs as well so she is one very talented lady who deserves a lot of respect as there are not many artists these days that sings and writes their own material .
I think that you should give this album a try. ...

Album Notes: '19' is the debut album by London songstress Adele. In a vocal and style reminiscent of Amy Winehouse, Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald this is an album that easily justifies the comparisons. Smoky, lingering vocals lament tales of lost love and heartbreak whilst retaining a positive charm. Features the singles 'Chasing Pavements' and 'Hometown Glory'.
