I have never regarded myself as a big Beatles fan, in fact I would even go as far as to say that I didn’t really like them much at all. This could possibly be because my friends used to harp on about them and pretend to like them just to make themselves look "cool". Or it could be down to my brother who is the biggest Beatles fan around. Every birthday or Christmas there is always another CD that he needs to add to his collection.
So when the new Beatles compilation "One" was released at the end of last year, I knew that I would end up buying it for him at some point even though I personally thought that it was just a marketing ploy as we really did not need another compilation on the market. However, I bought it for his birthday and he loved it.
Only problem was that I loved it too. Yep, it finally happened - I started to like the Beatles. But why? What was so good about this CD?
Well, firstly it contains twenty seven tracks of which each one was a number one hit in either the UK or the US. As a result, there is a very impressive line up of songs such as Eight Days A Week, Ticket To Ride and Day Tripper. However, there are a lot of great Beatles classics missing from this album as they obviously did not reach the top of the charts.
As such, this CD is not the "definitive" Beatles compilation but as someone who is just beginning to appreciate their music, it is a good starting point. It would also be a good purchase for the die hard Beatles fan who is looking for a single CD for their car stereo as never before has there been a comprehensive list of their number one hits on one CD.
The compilation itself has the tracks arranged in chronological order starting with their first US number one, "Love Me Do" (it didn’t top the charts here) and ending with their last No.1 hit single "The Long And Winding Road".
The CD booklet (I can never remember the proper name for these) is pretty basic with a page dedicated to each song showing the original record sleeve, what country, what year and how many weeks the particular track was at the top of the charts.
The full listing is as follows:
(1) Love Me Do (2) From Me To You (3) She Loves You (4) I Want To Hold Your Hand (5) Can’t Buy Me Love (6) A Hard Day’s Night (7) I Feel Fine (8) Eight Days A Week (9) Ticket To Ride (10) Help! (11) Yesterday (12) Day Tripper (13) We Can Work It Out (14) Paperback Writer (15) Yellow Submarine (16) Eleanor Rigby (17) Penny Lane (18) All You Need Is Love (19) Hello, Goodbye (20) Lady Madonna (21) Hey Jude (22) Get Back (23) The Ballad Of John And Yoko (24) Something (25) Come Together (26) Let It Be (27) The Long And Winding Road
Overall, this is good value for money as it contains 27 tracks but is only a single CD. Prices vary from £12-£13 on the high street to £8.99 online from CD-WOW (www.cdwow.com).
Somehow I’ve discovered that I am really a Beatles fan and my brother can’t find his "One" CD. Then again, his Sgt Pepper one has gone walkabout too. Wonder where they could be...?

It could have been better, but it's a good introduction to the band. ~Liz

Interesting perspective on this album, but quite similar to my own in that you mention that it misses out so many of the songs. Now that you're converted I suggest you start listening to Revolver a lot!
Advantages: The number 1's of the biggest selling band of all time, you can't ask for much more than that. Has introduced a whole new generation to the delights of the Beatles Disadvantages: Some of the Beatles best tracks are not included. An album released purely to make money???
