Advantages: Oistrakh is perfect in technique, style, and interpretation for 20th century works Disadvantages: as an older recording, soloist brought out well above orchestra. its oistrakh!
...The Shostakovich violin concertos are already amazing, and oistrakh playing them is perfect. his understanding, style, and technique are perfect for lots of 20thcenturyworks such as ysaye, shostakovich, and prokofiev. he uses his mastery of bow control to help bring out the shape and the journey of shostakovich and ysaye's works. i find his interpretations of shostakovich and ysaye the easiest to understand and enjoy in general. it's oistrakh...i don't need to say that much...
ysaye's amitie for 2 violins is absolutely incredible. i discovered it recently... it's dramatic and has tuneful romantic moments at times (he was very influenced by romantic music), yet is very heartfelt and sentimental throughout, hence its name which means 'friendship'. it sticks to ysaye's cool modern style of music in its clever use of whole tone...

Advantages: Relaxing, serene, dreamy Disadvantages: The first track is not actual Albinoni
....
Albinoni was to die in 1751, in his beloved Venice.

The CD contains 23 of Albinoni’s slower movements taken from his concertos and sonatas. Many are adagios, others are andante (walking pace), Larghetto (quite slowly). All though are slow in tempo. The overall effect is that of a slow serenity.
The first track on the CD is the popular Adagio for Organ and Strings in G minor. This piece, however, had little to do with the compositions of Albinoni. It was constructed from a fragment by the 20thcentury musicologist Remo Giazotto who holds the copyright. Here, it is played a little faster than a lot of the other versions available. Each individual instruments is heard clearly and brightly. It is an absolutely delightful rendition of a favourite piece of music albeit not Albinoni’s own and provides an appropriate introduction...

...I must confess to not being a fan of the music my son enjoys, but this album is truly magnificent. The sampling of early 20thcentury blues combined with 21st century dance rhythms shows that this guy is a real genius. "Natural Blues" is easily my favourite song at the moment, but I can't think of any track on the album where I need to find the skip button, not something I can say for many albums I purchase! Moby told Jools Holland that the tracks were recorded in a
bedroom in his New York apartment - I just wish more artists would spend time at home if this is the standard of work that they would produce....
