The greatest album of the 20th century
Review of Dark Side Of The Moon (30th Anniversary Edition) [Hybrid SACD] - Pink Floyd by  yiddoboy

Advantages: All the benefits of the quadrophonic recording without the crackle
Disadvantages: the vinal still sounds warmer

...What can I add after that title? I have my original pressing first release vinal album which still sounds superb although getting a quadrophonic amp that still works is a bitch! This SACD presentation brings back much of the original feel and nearly the depth of the original which the cd lacked particuarily if used via naff kit. This is Floyd at their peak in my humble opinion and one of the defining albums of the twentieth century. If you don't already own it buy it now forget Seargent Pepper and th White Album this is the must buy album of all time. Ok you need a sacd player and a decent 5.1 amp to appreciate this album at its best having said that if you have the kit sit back and enjoy. It's hard to believe this album was recorded so long ago considering the multi level nature of the tracks that are so far ahead of their time.... Read review

20th century noise explosion

Advantages: Unique sound, lots of energy, catchy tunes
Disadvantages: All too brief recording career

...and techno and indulging in liberal use of drum machines, they sound nothing like Nine Inch Nails, New Order or Gravity Kills. So I'll avoid trying to pigeonhole them and just tell you about their self-titled album. Released in 1999, "Radiator" is an energetic, catchy piece of work that can a) liven up a dull day, b) get you shaking your ass as you get ready for a night out, or c) keep you entertained while driving (you certainly won't be falling asleep at the wheel, that's for sure). Track by track, with my guesses about what they're about (all songs excellent unless otherwise stated): 1. I Am A song about confidence, or more specifically the confidence to keep your nerve when things are going wrong. Opens the album in a flourish of energy, a punk song with samples and breakbeats. Occasionally slows in pace for about half a second... Read review

Review of Renée Fleming - Bel Canto [SACD] by  Maestrolover

Advantages: Virtuosic operatic vocalism, unusual repertoire, mad scenes...
Disadvantages: Fleming's voice is maybe not best suited for this...

...to the melody. This frequently exceedingly florid flow of notes has made the genre famous for its use for highly over-emotional, frequently hysterical and often totally utterly barking (singing...?) mad heroines - a type very common in bel canto period operas! When the emotions are overflowing, when your life has fallen apart (or indeed together,) there's nothing like a bit of over-the-top bel canto to express all these over-the-top feelings. Some of the most famous 20th century bel canto sopranos were Joan Sutherland, the inimitable Maria Callas and Montserrat Caballé. Interestingly, Reneé Fleming has never really been regarded as a true bel canto soprano, which is one reason why this CD has received such divided opinions.
