The 2112 Overture, as any self-respecting spotty 14-year old headbanger will be able to tell you, comes inspired mostly by the philosipher Ayn Rand's book Anthem. Rand (1905-1982) wrote in that wordy tome of a world "when every form and emblem of individualism has been erased and society has reverted to a preindustrial level. Its hero, a scientist in a world where the pursuit of knowledge is a crime, discovers the meaning of individual ... ...and you're there.
Led by Geddy Lee's helium vocal, we wander through a soundscape of cascading water, thundering guitars, acoustic guitars and sometimes ambience. Hear the discovery of the guitar, "it's got six strings and vibrates", the presentation of the find to the Priests Of The Temples Of Syrinx, much to their disdain, the contemplation of rejection and eventual suicide, before the dazzling finale over massed guitars and THAT closing line.

Advantages: an all time experience Disadvantages: you may be a bit embarassed due to its outdated nature
I am not a massive prog rock fan..i listened to a bit of led zep when i was about 13 after discovering the doors and falling in love with morrison...but really i was just too young...the band 'yes' put me off exploring this path any further and thank god for punk rock I put all this stuff in the category of old hippy music. However...now that I am an old hippy(sob) and the years of punk, thrash, techno, hardcore and whatever else just makes me weary,i ... ...dinosaur friend. And wow! I was blown away. Also a fan of musicals(i know this is not cool to admit, but there you go) i love the concept album concept...a rock opera???whatever...the opening to this is best experienced lying down in the dark imagining space. This is a journey to another realm...a world where music is prohibited and sound is controlled by the priests of syrinx(great titles in here for trekkie types) but the magic is in the guitar! ...

The title track on this album has to be my all time favourite song. It is a 20 minute exploration opening with a grand build up, taking a transition throguh a mellow middle and then ending with a massive crescendo! The musical aspect of the whole album is fenomenal and there is not a moment at which the quality dips! Every song is an instant favourite as you listen to it including the adventurous Xanadu and the semi-apocalyptic Cygnus X-1. The whole ... ...scale and rythmn known to man and makes use of effects and timings to great effect. I think personally that it should be the law to own at least one copy of this album! The sleave also has some interesting stuff in but just put it in and crank it up! ...

Advantages: The Best Prog Rock Album EVER! Disadvantages: none
...album. Firstly, the main track 2112 is split up into 7! thats right 7! different parts, with the first two and the last part being the more rock parts, whilst its calmer in the middle of track. Other songs like Passage to Bangcock has an amazing riff and a awsome solo that only Alex Lifeson could think of. Something for nothing is also a great song with lots of little solos showing Alex's skill again. The vocalist for Rush is one Geddy Lee, who has ...
