Review of Captain Fantastic & The Brown Dirt Cowboy (Deluxe Edition) [Digipak] - Elton John by ScottishWestie

Advantages: Quality of music, extra CD, extra books with lyrics & scraps
Disadvantages: Books difficult to read

...On June 17th 1967 Liberty Records placed an advert in the New Musical Express paper for talent; it wanted artists, composers or singer-musicians to form a new group. In a rural village called Owmby-by-Spital in Lincolnshire, a young teenager named Bernie Taupin had written some poems & with a little persuasion from his mother, he sent them to Liberty records. Meanwhile in Pinner, North London, another young lad called Reginald Kenneth Dwight (a.k.a. Elton John) submitted details of himself to Liberty & received a request to do an audition. Around this time Elton John had played keyboards for a band called Bluesology who amongst others had backed Long John Baldry. Elton had never been the lead singer just the keyboard player & didn't have many songs available to perform on his own. At the audition he was asked to sing three songs & he... Read review

Blast from the past
Review of Songs From The West Coast - Elton John by The_IceMan

Advantages: Harks back to the early Elton/Bernie style
Disadvantages: May not be popular with the modern youth

...I originally bought this album for my wife, considering that I have not liked much of Elton's new stuff, i was amazed to find that it is classic Elton. With strong overtones of Bernie Taupin, this is like a blast from the past. The Emporers new Clothes ( track 1) is from the heart and is reminiscent of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, which is another Elton Classic from the 70's. This album in my humble opinion is Elton returning to the style that made him great, with a mellow upbeat fun sound that gets you in the heart and mind and drags you on a journey of discovery. This album will not appeal to some of the younger members of society, but if you can remember "Bennie and the Jets" or " Crocodile Rock" then you will want this album in your collection alongside Yellow Brick Road, Candle in the Wind and Rocketman. Sure to be a classic... Read review
