reinventing them. But over the course of their 21 Singles, compiled here, the Jesus and Mary Chain did just that. When the first, "Upside Down", emerged on Creation in 1984, the template was set. The Reid brothers who anchored the band would take the idea of sullen, black-leather-clad rebellion to a darker and more inhospitable place than anyone before them. Even now, the early Mary Chain singles sound astounding, the way pop and the avant-garde are mangled together in them so beautifully. But 21 Singles goes far beyond these, through another 14 years of protean glumness, patchy albums and, fortunately, many excellent singles. It proves, once and for all, that the Mary Chain's forte was the three-minute pop thrill, the precisely calibrated jukebox hit. An uncanny number of them--"Some Candy Talking", "Sidewalking", "Reverence"-- remain among the very best of the past 20 years. And the more slack moments still have their uses: to render futile the entire careers of artless impersonators such as Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, for a start. The Mary Chain's last two singles, from 1998, "I Hate Rock'n'Roll" and "I Love Rock'n'Roll", neatly close affairs: bitter and celebratory; consumed and confused by music and the impulse to make it, which has driven them for so long. This band were genius, and this is why.--John Mulvey

Album Reviews: Mojo (8/02, p.121) - \"...This strictly no-filler collection shows what a consistently impressive singles band they were and also that most of the songs sound like they could have been written at any point during the group's lifespan...\"
...The argument of this sounstrack is passion and resuction of our lord Jesus Christ as Rock Opera that tells us in the Gospel, specially the passion, in this Opera have starrings Jesus christ and Judas the Jesus Christ's treasonous, talking with Jesus Christ's enemies, Mary of Magdala who died Jesus Christ's died, .
This is an adaptation of the gospel written the lyrics by Tim Rice and the music Andrew Lloyd, this is a story telling as Judas part of the story.
It was releasing at the begging of the seventies in 1975 this story went to be a movie and then it has an Spanish version with Camilo Sesto as Jesus Christ and Angela Carrasco

Advantages: Some decent tracks, well written and decent vocals Disadvantages: A tad long in places, which detracts a little from certain tracks
...Rebel Motorcycle Club turned out to be one of them. While a number of those bands seem to have vanished into obscurity this trio have managed to ride the wave and as a result have increased in popularity with each passing album.
I think the main reason for The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club staying power is the fact they didn't sound identical to all the other bands at the time. They seemed to have quite a refreshing blend of influences and that is why they were set apart from the mass influx. It's clear that the band are fans of 70's & 80's rock and blend it perfectly with a touch of Phsychadelia from the late 60's and top it off nicely with the mid 90's Indie rock sound. This first album seemed to have the media comparing them to Jesus and MaryChain, but as it turned out it was just a starting point for the larger picture and for the most...

Deserter Songs Review ofContino Sessions, The - Death In Vegasby

Advantages: Making the Indie-Dance Crossover Genre Cool Again. Disadvantages: Can't Play This Album Using Winamp Because of the Dirge Cd Rom!
...in the sky.
If you were to try and categorise their music Death In Vegas could be neatly positioned beside Primal Scream. The fact that Bobby Gillespie guest vocals on 'Soul Auctioneer' only proves that there is a mutual admiration society going on between the 2 bands. It's just a pity Sir Bob had to pick such a weak track to add his tuppence worth. It is just the right side of dull but is as forgettable as an ageing goldfish.
The celebrity love-in continues with 'Aisha' sung by Iggy Pop. It has all the ingredients of a wild, dirty weekend and is positively menacing. But then, that wallowing far-eastern snake charmer sound finds an extra gear to lift the mix to the next level and suddenly everything makes sense. Enthralling is hardly descriptive enough. Jim Reid of the Jesus and MaryChain also lends a hand on vocals on ‘Broken Little...
