21st Century Breakdown is Green Day's 8th studio album. It was released on May 15th, and after being very impressed with their previous album 'American Idiot' i was expecting alot from them - and they certainly haven't disappointed. Infact, it's a step above in my opinion. The album reached number 1 in the UK album charts. The genre is alternative/punk rock.

Over the years, i would say that Green Day's sound has become more mature. This album includes a good mixture of fast rocky songs, and ballady songs - which i think is good as they can reach other markets too. Another noticable change through the years - they have started including much longer songs on their albums.
The album opens up with 'Song Of The Century'. This is a slow intro to the album. Billy Joe sings acapella, and then the track builds up towards the end. I don't remember hearing Billy singing acapella before - but I think it's a nice start to the album, and sets the mood very well.
'Know Your Enemy', the band's first single to be released from the album, reminds me very much of the tracks on 'American Idiot'. It has a chorus that is easy to sing along to - i love it! It has a great beat to it, and gets you head-banging along and jumping around (or it does me!) I think this a sure song to be on their set-list for their upcoming arena tour. It's just a shame the charts didn't replicate just how good the song is.
My personal favourite on this album would have to be track number thirteen, 'Restless Heart Syndrome'. It is quite a slow song in contrast to some of the other songs on the album. I would say that the mood of the song is quite sad - which is a nice contrast to the heavier songs on the album. It is a song which i instantly fell in love with, on first listen of the album.
Overall i would say that this is a must-own album if you are a fan of Green Day, or if you are in general a fan of alternative/punk rock music.
The album can be purchased from both highstreet and online retailers, such as; Asda, Tesco, HMV, Amazon etc...

Advantages: Good value for money. Quality music throughout. Like idea of three acts. Disadvantages: Could do with a little more variety. Some tracks maybe a little too long.
