(bass, organ, percussion, vocals, congas); Bud (drums, samples).Additional personnel includes: Adam (vocals, congas); Miguel (samples, guitar, vocals, piano, organ, sound effects).Recorded at Mambo, Long Beach, California. Originally released on Skunk (001). The sound is a blistering blend of ska, reggae, and '80s West Coast thrash a la Black Flag, with a healthy dose of spoken-word and rub-a-dub dancehall thrown in for good measure. This magnificent debut was required listening on the Southern California skateboard circuit. Fans of any of the aforementioned musical styles are likely to get a kick out of hearing singer Brad Nowell rollick through songs like Smoke Two Joints. The attack is a pure assault of youthful energy, almost over-the-top, but controlled, always reigned in by the rhythm, which rules. Samples abound, as Sublime pays tribute to its musical idols in true '90s fashion: by including chunks of their songs. Even the Grateful Dead gets a nod.[Reviews]Kerrang (27/05/06, p.68) - Essential Purchase - An underground classic...n
Advantages: Great lyrics, melody, instrument-playing, DJing Disadvantages: Bradley isn't alive to make any more great music

Sublime played a vast range of styles, from reggae to hardcore and 40 Oz is no exception. Every track is full of melody, great lyrics, and very talented musicianship. Eric's fantastic bass-playing, Bud's various rhythms, Marshall Goodman's slick turntablism, and Brad's powerful vocals all combine to form the band's sound. Track-By-Track Review:

40 Oz. To Freedom:
- A Sublime classic with a distorted chorus and chilled verses. *****
Smoke Two Joints:
- This is a cover of a Toyes song about the joys of the cannabis plant. I personally think that the Sublime version is superior to the original, despite the lack of all the original's lyrics. *****
We're Only Gonna Die For Our Arrogance:
- A storming cover of the classic Bad Religion song performed with a ska-infused ...

Advantages: Potentially timeless, vast musical spectrum Disadvantages: Not many
This album is arguably the best offering from rap/reggae/punk fusion band , Sublime. The untimely demise of the lead singer in a very rock 'n' roll manner means that with no new releases, its a good job that this album is so good. Almost thirty tracks confirms its status as one of those value for money albums and there are so many stand out tracks on this record that it would futile to list them.
The album has a very free-flowing feel to it, however, ... ...or consistency. I prefer to say that this is a reflection on its raw grit and energy. Most people would struggle to avoid finding a track they like on here and if any of the three above genres interest you then this will be right up your street.
There is a cover of 'Rivers of Babylon' which is blissfully relaxing and will appeal to fans of the old-school reggae style. While the constant switching and changing of the musical stylings means that the ...

Advantages: Really great songs written with much care and thought Disadvantages: Too much crammed on
40oz to Freedom is the first release by Ska/reggea/hiphop legends Sublime. Being a huge Sublime fan, i have to say this is my favourite album, it includes some really effective and funky samples mixed with Brad's unique, soft and quite simply stunning vocal style. He likes a good old guitar solo does Brad, and theres certainly no lacking of that here. Upbeat drumming and smooth basslines ensure that every tune on this album is going to stick in your ... ...this album except for the idea that just maybe, there are one too many songs crammed on which are repeated on other Sublime albums. Considering that point from the perspective of someone whos never heard Sublime before, this album would be a great first purchase to get you started and into a band who quite frankly, "OWN" the ska/punk and always have.
This has to be one of the best albums by one of the best and most talented bands ever to grace God's ...
