inspiration in the work of Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, and a decade's worth of soul men. Kravitz hasn't lost the funk on 5, but the sound here drifts dangerously close to the Me decade's shallowest end, when disco seemed to rob R&B of its soul. So the passion Kravitz has shown on early albums is strangely diluted (aside from the album-closing epic "Can We Find a Reason?"). 5 is the singer's first foray into digital technology, but despite a few modern effects at the edges, he's doing essentially the same as before--only colder. --Steve Appleford

...LennyKravitz, 5 - I think this is album is fantatstic. Once again, Lenny has come out with an album that is completely different from his others. Although some purists will groan at the fact that he uses synthesizers and drum programming in this album, he still manages to stick to his with songs like 'Fly Away' and 'Your My Flavor'. 'Live' and 'Supersoulfighter' are really funky. There seems to be a bit of a message coming through in this album, with 'Take Time' and 'Can We Find a Reason'. At 75 minutes, this clocks in as Lenny's longest album ever, which means a few of the songs can be very repetitive at times, i.e., 'Little Girl's Eyes,' 'If you Can't Say No.'
A great listen, and it is fairly obvious why this was his most successful album.

Advantages: Lenny Kravitz Disadvantages: None
...i couldnt find anywhere to write a review about his album 5, the album with "Flay Away" on! that is the only album of Lenny's that i own and i would own more if i didnt work all the time! i do listen to it at work alot, it is very motivating yet some tracks are very calming, it kinda switches betwwen from track to track! I cant believe Lenny does all his own music, and what i mean by that is he plays drums, lead and bass guitar and he sings! he writes all his own music so you can tell it is from the heart and meaningful! if you are in the mood to relax it is a good album and if you are in a non chilling mood it is very de-stressing! i will update this soon......

Advantages: Pretty much all the Kravitz tunes anyone really needs, intelligently sequenced Disadvantages: Short by current Greatest Hits CD standards, only 1 new recording
...enough to actually scour the vaults for genuine recording tape from the era to use on his albums.
By 1998's 5, the fat low-fi sound had been superceded by a more contemporary feel. Black Velveteen, from that album, is the best Prince track the diminutive Purple maestro never made. Its inclusion here is a welcome bonus, as is the one brand-new track, Again. A mid-tempo soft-rock nugget with another naggingly familar tune that can't quite be placed, it's one of the best moments on a surprisingly consistent compilation.
LennyKravitz's fortunes have had their ups and downs (after 1995's disappointing Circus album, it's a wonder he ever recovered chart-wise), but this Greatest Hits CD shows the man has more staying power than perhaps many realised....
