5 Ragas (Sarangis & Tabla) - Sabri Family (The)

...Ram Narayan, an expert in the sarangi, is truly a representation of brilliance in his field. not only has he completely mastered the art of the sarangi (a string instrument played with a bow, some what similar to a cello in the style of playing) which in itself is an accomplishment as the sarangi is an awfully challenging instrument, but he has also learnt to render the ragas (musical compositions) and extremely techinical and mathematical taals (rhythmic cycles). Sarangi, i can very confidently say, is an instrument that has the potential for the musician to play his heart out and i would say that ram narayan has done that exactly in this cd. he really knows the in and outs of his ragas and can make a composition finish in 5 minutes or last for 2 hours. this is the mark of a distinguished musician in my opinion. i would reccomend... ...When i first heard of this CD i was like WOW! For the first time ever someone is playing tunes on tablas. (the western equivelent would be playing songs on loads of drum kits all tuned to different notes). I bought the cd immediately and couldnt wait to play it at home. I must admit though, when i played it, i could have killed myself. It was sooo dreadful. the most boring and monotonous music i have ever heard. it actually featured some of my favourite ragas in it (melodic scales) but now i regret walking in to the store and buying this. i am soo sorry for doing such a negative review but i have to get this out. Please no body ever buy this cd because like me you will become scarred for the rest of you lives! also, if you are into world music or indian music, there are hundreds of other cds, buy them, not this. even if somehow you... Advantages: One of the most passionate performances of Ravi Shankar
