70's Anthology, The - Supremes (The)

Advantages: bonus tracks not on the 7 inches and you don't have to keep flipping the vinyl.
Disadvantages: you may already have most of it on the vinyl

...An anthology CD collecting all of the Bones Brigade's out-of-print 7-inches along with five unreleased studio tracks as well. Fast as hell thrashcore/crossover/skatecore mix up early Suicidal Tendencies/DRI along with DS-13 and thrown in a bit of 70s rock and you'll be in the general ballpark (or skatepark even!), there's an excellent cover of Suicidal's Two Sided Politics on here. It's the sort of stuff that provides a great sound track to an aggressive skate session full of skint knees, faceplants and general injury. The quality is consistently high throughout, no murky recordings from a practice or anything and every song is a killer. They were also great live but have now split up, members were/are also in The Rites and Cut The Shit.... Read review

Advantages: A new facet of rock's greatest
Disadvantages: Not for the casual fan

...the same sessions, "If You've Got Trouble", which - true to its title - they were dissatisfied with. 'Oh rock on, anybody!' cried the despairing vocalist, Ringo Starr, halfway through the recording. Like its predecessor, track 1 is a brand new track based on a John Lennon demo from the late 70s, "Real Love", to which the other three added vocals and instruments in a good 15 years or so later. Though it never rose higher than No. 4 as a single, in my view it is a far better song than the still likeable but rather odd "Free As A Bird". On balance I'd say that, because of the smaller proportion of 'exclusive' numbers, this is perhaps marginally less essential than Anthology 1, but if you're a devoted fan who bought the first, you probably won't be satisfied without its predecessor. ...Anthology 3 documents the fractious Beatles years from 1968 to the end. Apple Records was launched ironically as the quartet were splintering into different units; to put it one way, they were increasingly solo artists appearing as session musicians on each others songs, or to look at it another way, they were already peering over the horizon at the post-Beatle world. There were no reconstructed and heavily overdubbed demos from which to create 'new' singles, but plenty of alternate takes from the white album, "Abbey Road", and "Let It Be" (with John spoiling the seriousness of a run-through of the title track by cheerfully calling Paul a bounder and a cheat!) as well as early versions of "All Things Must Pass" and "Not Guilty", which George wrote and later recorded properly on two of his solo albums in the 70s; and Paul's versions...
