Following the phenomenal success of his first album '0' in 2002, Damien Rice astounded us yet again in 2006 with his follow up album '9'. Having waited four years for this album to appear seemed like a lifetime and in a way I was in trepidation, fearing it couldn't possibly live up his breathtakingly beautiful album '0'.

--- 9 by Damien Rice---
I received 9 as a Birthday gift; it was all that I had been on about since I learned of its release. I already owned '0' and found each and every track truly stunning. There wasn't a weak track within the whole album and I found the beauty of the melodies and lyrics deeply profound. I didn't want '9' to fall short and I certainly didn't want to compare the two. I was hoping '9' would stand on its own as yet another ...

Advantages: Inspiring mix of soft ballads and soulful rock. Disadvantages: One or two weak tracks at the end let it down.
...album: 1 - 9 Crimes: Typically Damien Rice-ish in sound and lyrics. Very slow, incredibly depressing, but the use of vocals and a beautiful cello section make it all worthwhile. 9/10
2 - The Animals Were Gone: This is a grower. Has a rythmn akin to a slow 1950s ballad, but again the use of vocal harmonies and strings will make your heart melt. Bit of a strange ending to the song though. 8/10
3 - Elephant: Bit of a surprise, this one. Starts like ... ...it too. 3/10
9 - Accidental Babies: Time for a weepy? The Damien Rice emotional rollercoaster really kicks into gear with this one. You've had your adrenaline pumped with track 7, been sent into a coma with track 8, and now time for depression! In fairness, it is beautifully written, and keeping it limited to just his vocals and a piano really adds to the atmosphere. Good track. 8/10
10 - Sleep, Don't Weep: Sounds spookily like "Cold Water" from ...

Advantages: Great chilled tunes Disadvantages: Very slow
...from the album is called 9 crimes and is a masterpiece of a track with Hannigans vocals' a highlight (as is often the case). It kicks off this album and follows perfectly from the amazing 'O' album. I wasn't sure if Damien Rice could find it in him to write as good an album as the last.... However, he appears to have done it with this. There are one or two lesser tracks on there but in the main its absolutely jam-packed with classics.
As you expect ... ...does his use of strange instruments (wurlitzer, wine glasses etc) within the tracks. If you enjoyed his previous work there is no question that this album should be purchased asap! For those who are unfamiliar with Rice's work.. buy the album, get it on the stereo... loud, sit back and relax. You will be pleased you took my advice. ...

Advantages: amazingly beautiful songs Disadvantages: a bit miserable
i was'nt a huge fan of Damien Rice following the release of his first album 'O'. i just did'nt get the hype, there were a few good songs on that album, but i did'nt think it was consistantly great. That album ended up growing on me to a point that when it's successor '9' came out i was actually quite excited. I was not let down. '9' is Darker, harder and overall a lot better than it's predeccessor. it begins with '9 crimes', a beautiful piano song, ... ...to follow (if you love the scissor sisters upbeat disco, maybe this is'nt for you!). 'Elephant' is an awesome song, slowly building from just singer and quiet guitar to a smash of manic noise. 'Rootless Tree' and 'Coconut Skins' are probably the most commercial songs, both are like pop songs, done in the manner of Damien Rice of course (so dark, moody pop songs!). if i had to fault this collection, i would say that there are a few weak songs, and ...

Album Notes: Sophomore album for Irish folk-pop singer-songwriter follows the phenomenal success of his 2002 debut 'O'. Whilst continuing in much the same vein as that album - musically delicate and deeply introspective - it features some expansion into rock territory. As such it has been hailed by critics as a natural progression for Rice and is sure to appeal to his considerable and diehard fanbase. Includes the singles '9 Crimes' and 'Rootless Tree'.
