DAVID GRAY – A NEW DAY AT MIDNIGHT Before his album White Ladder, not many people had heard of David Gray, I have to admit to being one of those people. With White Ladder going seven times platinum it was always going to be a hard act to follow. After a successful album some artists just fade away in the background with their following albums, but for David Gray I think that A New Day at Midnight just highlights how good an artist he is, and is hopefully a sign that he is going to be here to stay for some time to come.
The album is definitely easy listening and from a first glance at the cover this is clear to all. The cover is of a tranquil scene just after sunset and sets the theme nicely for listening to this album. The Inlay has the lyrics to all the tracks, but for most people singing along would only spoil listening to this CD.
The only thing that I can put this album down on is that some of the tracks do sound too similar to each other, but its only when you listen really closely to this that you notice.
*****Dead in the water***** An excellent track to start the album off, an excellent beat the whole way through which with the piano alongside makes you imagine David playing it live shaking his head from side to side.
*****Caroline***** This song for some reason makes me feel like I am driving through the countryside on a sunny day. Again a great rhythm the whole way through and one you can’t help singing along to.
*****Long distance call***** This track has an excellent bass the whole way through and the strings give it a little bit of sharpness. This is the first of four songs which really start to relax you.
*****Freedom***** The intro half sounds like a brass band out on a fundraising at Christmas, but the song soon gets you into that laid back kind of mood making you forget all your troubles.
*****Kangaroo***** Just picture yourself sitting in the outback without a worry in the world. Very easy listening.
*****Last Boat to America***** This song is a bit too laid back for me. It’s the sort of song where you only listen to the music and not really think much of the vocals.
*****Real Love***** If the last few songs put you to sleep this song picks things up again, a song not unlike Dead in the Water.*****Knowhere***** This track I think is a lot more like the songs from White Ladder and is perhaps put in the album to remind you of it.
*****December***** Definitely a track that makes you feel like you are sitting wrapped up in a chair with a warm cuppa. A good one to listen to after a hard day or on a cold night.
*****Be Mine***** One of the best tracks on the album, be prepared to be singing the words to this one when you least expect it.
*****Easy way to cry***** Lets you know that you are getting towards the end of the album. A easy listening song which definitely puts you in a relaxing mood.
*****The other side***** If you have listened to White Ladder this is definitely Like Say Hello Wave Goodbye and like it is an excellent way to end the album.
One thing which I really like about this album is the way it starts and finishes. With Dead in the water and The other side being the two most recognised tracks from the album you really do feel like you enjoyed the whole of it even if you can’t remember some of the tracks in between. You never walk away from listening to this album feeling disappointed and that’s why I definitely feel this is an album for the collection, at only £9.99 from Amazon why not?

Advantages: Melancholy, thought provoking lyrics, beautiful emotionally loaded vocals-just lovely. Disadvantages: Bit mellow and sometimes the songs blend in to each other a bit.
Advantages: Wide range of music; some truly great tracks; consistently high quality Disadvantages: Very few, perhaps only that it is very slighty shorter than previous albums
