Joy to the World upholds their exacting standard of excellence. Rereleased from two concerts recorded in 1970 and 1977 and repacked with three bonus tracks, this collection is as perfect as it gets, thanks to pristine production, gorgeous vocal arrangements, and stately accompaniment by the Philadelphia Brass Ensemble, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Columbia Symphony Orchestra. This record will set the mood for revelling, both with more contemporary carols such as "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", and "The Christmas Song" and sacred numbers such as Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" and "O Holy Night". Joy to the World qualifies as a truly essential yuletide album. --Jaan Uhelszki
Advantages: Good Selection Of Old and New Disadvantages: Induces a Desire to Dust out the arran sweater
...this compliation as an ideal starting point for a deeper exploration of one of Europe's strongest living musical traditions and I wholeheartedley agree with themon these points.
The only downpoint on the collection being Wolfstone who were really a second rate Runrig (who were also bloody awful). The rest of it is a fine collection of Reels, Jigs and Laments in English and Scots Gaelic by some of the finest musicans from Scotland. The only point of contention being the inclusion of Ewan Maccoll's Dirty Old Town but since it is a great song and since he could have played for Scotland if he so desired then I will let them away with it.
This compilation completley succeeds in what it intends to do, which is to provide the uninitiated with an insight into ScottishFolkMusic. If you are curious or just want a sampler of the best that is on offer than you...

Advantages: All the best songs. Disadvantages: None!
...This is the best pop musiccompilation that is out at the moment. It has access to the rights for more groups than the rival compilation NOW. As a result there are many more excellent songs on this one. It is a double CD and is full of the latest top 40 hits. Artists include: S Club 7, Ronan Keating, Kylie MInogue, All Saints and many many more! The good songs are evenly spread throughout the two CD's so you get full use out of both (this is rare for compilations!).
My advice would be to stop buying all those singles and to get this compilation as all the best songs are on here!
You will find it in all good retail outlets......

Advantages: Great spread of music Disadvantages: Too much of a spread in places
...Looking back at the last 1000 years of music, and only drawing on music from the last 40-odd may seem a touch shallow, bot looking at the track-listing makes you see why. There is Oasis, Rolling Stones, The Who, John Lennon, Wings, Derek & The Dominoes, and a whole host of other classics.
The main sticking point is "where are the Beatles?", but when you realise that they're on no compilations due to the amount they demand in royalties, you realise they've dug their own grave in that respect.
The album runs very well, with one or two exceptions e.g. 'Millennium'-Robbie Williams, and a few other weak songs thrown in in an attempt to add a variety of artists.
Overall, in their bid to compile and produce an album of the bestmusic of the last millennium, a good job has been done!
But it!...
