Album Reviews: Down Beat (1960) - 5 Stars - Excellent - \"..One can but stand in awe at the beauty, artistry, and poignancy of this album...Abbey Lincoln climbs into your very being...one of the most artistically satisfying vocals albums to be had..\"
Advantages: Every single song included, every single note I would even say. Disadvantages: The price of this and every album by this band, at least here in Spain...and the fact that this album happened to be the last this band recorded (not released)
...Although ‘Abbey Road’ was released before ‘Let it Be’, the truth is that it was recorded after that one. That means that ‘Abbey Road’ was, in fact, the last album the Beatles recorded, and it was recorded after those hard recording sessions of ‘Let it Be’, those sessions in which the Beatles were arguing all the time, specially Lennon and McCartney, and also Harrison and McCartney. For ‘Let it Be’, they thought about going back to their early years style, a rock and roll album, without orchestra or weird instruments to play with. The name of that album, because of that reason, it was going to be ‘Get back’, but at the end, ‘Get back’ became just a song and a single, and the album was called ‘Let it Be’. Each song seems to flow right into the next, and the entire medley is just a work of genius.
Of course, the first half...

Advantages: The songs man, the songs Disadvantages: It heralded the end of an epoch
...’ Blue Eyes used to introduce it as his favourite Lennon/McCartney song, an unfortunate kick in the teeth for George.
Here Comes The Sun: The ultimate feel-good pop song: simple, beautiful and very catchy.
Because: A breathtaking example of the Beatles ability to harmonise. This song offers us a delicate three-part harmonisation that it is hard to find a comparison for anywhere else in the pop world.
The Whole Second Side of this album: The second half of Abbey Road is quite simply the reason that music was made. Catchy little songs that are effortlessly linked together. Just listen – ask no more questions.
In truth every single track is a classic. This is quite simply an excellent album. What makes it all the more remarkable is that the Beatles were coming apart at the seams while the songs were being recorded...
