Abbey Road was the last Beatles recorded studio album. Chronologically it wasnt their last, with Let It Be scooping that honour. Legend has it that each Beatle couldnt stand the sight of the other Beatle and the issue of who managed the band started to envelop their world. It seems like they had a lot on their plate but it was in this atmosphere that they produced some of their best music.
Unlike some of the other records, apart from Revolver, this album has a distinctly rocky feel to it - quite fitting considering that their future was in the balance. It is one of their longest records with seventeen songs capturing the magic of the worlds greatest ever band.
Things kick off with the double header of Come Together and Something. The latter is one of the best songs on the album and has been declared by Frank Sinatra to be the greatest love song of the 20th century. High praise indeed but the song deserves it. Every apect of the song is a sensation and the highlight, for me, is the third verse when George Harrison aches " Your asking me will my love grow, I dont know, I dont know ". Simple text cant convey how powerful this moment is and it showed that Harrisons songwriting ability could match Lennon and McCartneys.
Maxwells Silver Hammer is worth a mention but there are so many great points on this album I will have to miss it out. Oh! Darling is a brilliant song. It is never mentioned and is one of so many unspoken of gems that make the Beatles catalogue what it is. Paul McCartney turns in one of his best bass performances but the song is much more than this. It has a blues feel and would grace any Beatles album with its presence.
Here Comes The Sun is another beautiful sweeping song by Harrison as he seeks to establish himself as a great songwriter in his own right - something he does with ease. An intensely hummable song, it marks the end of conventional songs on the album as the medley of songs follows. On the CD the medley starts on the 8th song and doesnt finish until the last song. My favourite song is You Never Give Me Your Money. It has a boogie section in the middlewhere it goes up tempo before slowing down in a glorious climax to a glorious song. Nice.
It finishes up with Her Majesty, just a sort of comedy song to round off the album. And what a great album it is.
