Abbey Road is not the Beatles that we came to love and admire in the early 60’s. I think the band tried to change their image and music too much with this album and ended up with a mixed bag of tracks that do not flow together particularly well.

The two tracks Octopus’s Garden and Maxwell’s Silver Hammer have the feel of some of the music from the time of Yellow Submarine, but they don’t seem to convey the same enthusiasm that most of the music from that period had.

From about half way through the second side, some of the old Beatles style does start to emerge, particularly in Mean Mr Mustard and Polythene Pam, but the magic isn’t quite there.

The one track that should never have been recorded is I Want You. In my opinion this was added just to fill in space, as I can’t believe that anyone at that time really wanted this track including.

Of course Abbey Road is a classic album and any Beatles fan must have a copy, but I find that I have to be in a certain mood to appreciate most of the tracks. The one really great track is Here Comes The Sun. This I can listen to over and over again as it is a real Beatles classic and it is worth having the album for this track alone.

I remember when the album was released the great fuss that was made about the cover picture. This is the picture of the four Beatles walking across a zebra crossing on Abbey Road. All the rumours at the time said that Paul McCartney must be dead and the picture depicted this. Because Paul had bare feet it depicted a corpse, John in white was the preacher, Ringo in black was the undertaker and George in casuals was the grave digger. The number plate on the white Volkswagen had the registration 281F, this was supposed to say that Paul would have been 28 IF he was still alive. Nobody ever did quite explain how Paul was in the picture if he was dead, but this is show business.

We have relatives who live near to Abbey Road and it still sends a shiver down my spine when we drive along this road.

As the Beatles last album it is of course special, but unfortunately I don’t think the music is quite special enough.
