My god this album is a real find! It's a wonder I ever lived without Abbey in my life before this album came along. Growing up as a fan of brilliant Female Black vocalists like Billy Holliday, Nina Simone, Tracy Chapman, Lauren Hill, Erykah Badu and Mary J...it amazes me that I never once heard of Abbey Lincoln.
Her voice is smooth and soulfull and really does make you feel at ease. A certain depth and warmth to her voice that make you trust in what she says inately and in that you begin to realise the wisdom of her years. In her mid-seventies at the time of this recording, Lincoln lives life as a storyteller through song.
This album takes a nostalgic look at some of her own compositions from past albums. Although he original style takes roots as a pre-eminent jazz singer, in this album she demonstrates an eclectic recipe of influences ranging from soft country-blues to continental French subtle soul. In the song 'Throw it away' the smooth music and her warm voice carry you to a very contemplative and happy place. Listening to this song, I picture her strolling through some Parisian back streets comfortable in her skin at last as a beautiful and confident worldly woman (but then I am prone to meladrama!)
Abbey Sings Abbey feels really intimate, reminiscent with colourful splashes of melancholy romance. This album gives a reflective and knowing glance at a life fully lived but with a gentle and playful grasp at squezing every last drop out of the time we have so far. Truly brilliant.
