Shore Accompanies Epic Film With Epic Soundtrack

Advantages: Fantastic music, brilliant film
Disadvantages: Not to everyones taste

...I was simply in awe through all three of the Lord of the Rings films, and certainly think them to be one of if not THE most succesful adaptation of a book onto the big screen ever in cinema history. However, the grand emotion, sheer scale, and epic feel to the films could not be achieved without the music. The Two Towers contains some truly incredible pieces, composed and conducted by the legendary Howard Shore. Although essentially orchestral, the soundtrack does contain several choral sections, and even draws on scandinavian influences for 'The King of the Golden Hall'. This blend of choir and orchestra, and contrasts between grand and timid, diminutive music are incredibly strong, and help make the album (and indeed the film) what it is. As well as fantastic harmonies and grand blending of instruments, some truly beautiful melodies... Read review

Saracen are back!
Review of Red Sky - Saracen by  Vodkaboy

Advantages: A superb, creative band back together
Disadvantages: Had to wait nearly 20 years!

..."Legends tell of a world that our distant fathers knew Though we look from afar there's a light that shines on you" So starts Red Sky, the long awaited (by me anyway) comeback album by 80s symphonic rockers, Saracen. Back in the eighties there were a lot of rock bands who almost made it big. Of all of them, the ones who most deserved it were Saracen. Their debut album, Heroes, Saints and Fools was a masterpiece, which should have become one of the most ground breaking albums of the decade but was sadly passed over. The band split up shortly afterwards. However, last year, guitarist and main man Rob Bendelow got the band back together again in the wake of a rather impressive solo album, Come To The Light. Red Sky is the result, twelve songs of which four are from the original two Saracen albums, a fifth is an old Saracen standard... Read review

Thomas Newman: Angels in America
Review of Angels In America - Thomas Newman by  berlioz

Advantages: The most magnificent and sublime soundtrack that offers something for almost everyone
Disadvantages: The three source songs

...are the two orgasmic moments where the Angel gives Prior Walter an orgasm in "Plasma Orgasmata" and does the same for one of Meryl Streep's characters in "Garden of the Soul." Here the music sounds incredibly similar to the "Scene d'Amour" in Bernard Herrmann's Vertigo but without sounding too much like a rip-off. In fact the build-up to those big climaxes is always heartfelt and when the climax comes, it is a great release that is very similar to the kind of release one hears in the final "Liebestod" in Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. Of course there are also the odd sorts and other cues that are more scene specific. One of my absolute favourites is the scene when Prior enters heaven in the aptly titled cue "Heaven." With the black and white surroundings of the crumbling Heaven and the red clothing of Prior (with the red Golden Gate bridge... Read review
