Additional notes
Album Notes: Producers: Greg Penny, Ben Mink and K.D. Lang. Truly a "crossover" album, ABSOLUTE TORCH AND TWANG clearly maps k.d. lang's progression from the quirky, yet firmly country stylings of her first three albums to the pure pop of 1992's INGENUE, the record which elevated her to international stardom. Although recorded in Vancouver, British Columbia, the album has all the sheen of Nashville "New Country," without the insincerity and cookie-cutter lyrics. Sympathetic backing from a crack band, led by lang's long-time producer/songwriting partner Ben Mink, allows her to make full use of her impressively clear, expressive voice. The songs here are generally upbeat and full of humor, making the dark, brooding tone of the subsequent INGENUE all the more surprising (and effective). Although her political outspokenness, sexual orientation, and vegetarianism have often drawn fire from country music's unflinching flame-keepers, on ABSOLUTE TORCH AND TWANG, lang manages to convincingly demonstrate her love for country's sacred traditions while successfully breaking new ground.
