Baggy Trousers epitomised the Madness sound AND look with its cheeky schoolboy lyrics, fast, staccato rhythm, ska sax breaks and even more important, its promotional video. Directed by Dave Robinson, the video’s piece de resistance was an airborne, sax playing Lee Thompson, sporting a pair of ludicrously baggy trousers. There was no doubt that this helped push the record up to number 3 in October 1980 and keep it in the charts for four months. There followed a series of promotional videos that were as important to Madness as the songs. The band’s acting abilities, along with crazy themes, trick photography and no sartorial inhibitions whatsoever, gave them a video identity that was to remain unrivalled for years.
The end of 1980 saw the release of a second album, Absolutely, a follow up single, Embarrassment, more matinees and a sell out charity show - Madness were fast capturing the top of the popular music tree and were lording it over all other acts.
Absolutely captured the Madness world perfectly, showcasing their talent for all to see, and is a bona fide pop classic.
