This is the third album from brit-rockers Muse.Always a formidable live band, the first album was patchy whilst 'Origin of symmetry' tailed off poorly at the end. This marks their first fully realised album. Matt Bellamy's reigned in the vocal acrobatics a bit and the songs, whilst musically complex at times, have some fine pop choruses.
The openning 'intro' is just the sound of the band stampign their feet which isn't really necessary, and the same can be said about the later 'interlude'. 'Apocalypse Please' follows and is a monstorous slice of music, with pounding drums and futuristic sound effects. 'Time is running out' is similarly bombastic, with a chorus built for singing along and some very cool sounding finger clicking. 'Sing for absolution' is the first ballad and has some particuarly nice guitar touches. It's tender yet still mnages to sound huge. 'Stockholm Syndrome' is a frantic guitar workout with a bass line apparantly influenced by system of a down. 'Falling away with you' is reminiscient of 'unintended' from the first albumand is similarly understated with a great soothing vocal. 'Hysteria' is heavy as hell and one of the high points of the album. 'Blackout' is a bit of a let down.Seems to spend a lot of time going nowhere. 'Butterflies and Hurricanes' has some great lyrics,as well as bieng one of the most ambitious tracks ont he album musically. 'The small print' is a fairly standard Muse song, that fails to excite. 'Endlessly' with a great keyboard riff is a highlight and is a fine piece of mid-paced rock. 'Thoughts of a dying atheist' is as ridiculous as its title, but the claustrophobic guitars and paranoid lyrics go well together. The finale, 'Ruled by Secrecy' is a mighty space rock epic that starts quiet and goes very bloody loud.
Muse have created an album that represents their immense musical ability. I can highly recommend it as one of the most exciting rock albums of its year.

Advantages: Beautiful lyrics accompanied by skillful drumming, fancy bass riffs and fantastic guitar solos. Disadvantages: One disappointing song, not as good as the other song on the album.
