Some fans may have been disappointed with 'Absolution' because it had taken a rather sharp turn away from the direction that they were heading towards. Instead of the thrumming guitar riffs of 'plug in baby' and the dream like quality of 'Bliss', Muse offered a less brash and 'head rush' experience of that in 'showbiz' and 'Origin of Symmetry'. However I think this album with its epic quality is a pure masterpiece. It shows how much the band had grown and become even more sophisticated (if it's possible) than before. Tracks such as 'Stockholm syndrome', 'Hysteria' (my personal favourite), 'butterflies and hurricanes' and `TSP` still have the old Muse sound quality to them to reassure us fans that they are who they say they are. The touch difference to their sound comes from the quirky 'Time is running out' with its amazingly catchy beat that you can't stop tapping your foot to. Then comes the track 'Blackout' with its powerful and melancholic orchestral arrangement. Its a beautiful song as is 'Sing for Absolution' showcasing Bellamy's incredible vocals that sends a shiver down your spine. The rest of the tracks on the album do have a softer edge to them. Instead of an album to burst into energy with (and strain your neck with too much head thrashing) like 'showbiz' and 'Origin of symmetry', 'Absolution' is pure escapism. An album that takes you from the funky world of Dr strangelove (time is running out video) to a place where you can close your eyes, chill out and thank Muse for taking you on a wondrous and beautiful journey. This is simply the best Muse album to date, & they will need to produce something very special to top it, which sadly their latest album doesn`t quite achieve (black holes & revelations).
