Review of Bach: Concerto for Two Violins in D minor / Violin Concertos in A minor & E minor by MAFARRIMOND

Advantages: Romantic orchestral music
Disadvantages: Only 1 hour - eat quickly for a romantic dinner

...of the exquisite music composed by Bach. Each of three concertos on the album complies with the standard concerto form favored by Bach of three contrasting movements – fast, slow, fast. The first piece, Concerto in E minor, has a fast opening movement in which the solo violin, played by Anne-Sophie Mutter, flirts with the larger orchestral group with an infectious cheerfulness. The second movement is quieter, slower and more reflective where the violin sings out day-dreamily. The piece ends with a fast, happy dance-like movement. Salvatore Accardo joins Anne-Sophie Mutter for the second piece, Concerto for two violins in D minor. This is probably the best known of Bach’s concertos. In the opening Vivace (lively) movement, the two soloists converse together in a quasi fugue. The first violin making a statement answered by the second in an alternating... Read review

Yngwie Malmsteen - a modern day viking !
Review of Rising Force - Yngwie Malmsteen by Outspoken1

Advantages: Makes you feel like a viking god !
Disadvantages: You get arrested for breaking the speed limit ;-)

...Yngwie J Malmsteen is a virtuoso guitarist. Those who appreciate classical music may love what he has to offer - try Paganini at 100,000 watts! Pure classical genius and a real athlete on the guitar! Yngwie uses a style of playing originally meant for the violin that lends itself so well to the guitar. Paganini's violin playing was painstakingly worked out to push the violinist to the limits of physical endurance and concentration and gave forth such an aura of power that people thought he was in league with the devil! If you imagine this classical skill in the possession of someone with the spirit of a viking coupled with today's modern technology and a crowd that is "moved" to a state of trancendental appreciation - you have an Yngwie J Malmsteen concert. I like it - if you buy one album of his, make it this.... Read review

Harold's excitement in Italy
Review of Berlioz: Harold in Italy by BlueImpromtu

Advantages: Good sound quality, strong and compelling interpretation
Disadvantages: really not applicable

...Now, we all hear of Berlioz for his wonderful and original Symphonie fantastique of 1830 and yet how many classical music fans can say they know this work as well as that? However, I would encourage you to get to know it. Berlioz originally wrote it as a viola concerto for the great virtuoso Paganini, who claimed it was not virtuosic enough. What a great joy to hear more from the viola! At times taking a solo, at others, shimmering in the background of the scenes. Pictorial and romantic, exciting and dynamic are just some words I would use to describe this CD. The LSO must be praised for their sensitive playing. Davis takes the reins to create a most compelling and vivid interpretation of Harold's journey. The balance of the solo viola line especially in the third movement here is well judged. The tempi are flexible and the pace... Read review
