Advantages: sublime music
Disadvantages: the hour it lasts is far too short!

...are never insistent, but support the floating melody lines. I bought this album for only £6, but it has become one of the most precious items of my collection of 300+ classical CDs. This is music which if listened to in times of stress can soothe, inspire, and transport, even if only briefly, to another world (or maybe to heaven!). It achieves everything that is aimed for, but rarely achieved, by new age composers. Each time I listen, I am struck by how little our need for soul food has changed in the last 400 years. The sacred music of Monteverdi, under the superb direction of Rene Jacobs, provides a true banquet for the spirit. Theatre music
Review of Claudio Abbado Edition by bassclef

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...I happen to go through a sale in a CD shop in London and came across this recording of Incidental music to two plays, written by Beethoven. The longer work is the incidental music to "The Consecration of the House". Most music lovers might know the overture but the complete incidental music is a sheer joy. The orchestra is Abbado's own, the Berlin Philharmonic and the soloists are Sylvia McNair and Bryn Terfel. There is a considerable amount of choral writing. The music is rich, joyous and, at times, full of grandeur. The recoding is suitably warm and rich whic matches the performances. The other item is a piece I did not know existed. It is music to Dunker's play "Leonora Prohaska". This is aslo a great find. This CD is an indispensable addition to all Beethoven lovers.... Read review

Beethoven's music as he should have heard it.
Review of Beethoven Symphonies 1-9 - London Classical Players - Sir Roger Norrington by Coloneljohn

Advantages: Outstanding music on period instruments
Disadvantages: Swaping C.D'S in music player.

...exactly the same. And that our tastes in music were the same. Techniques in production of instruments have changed, as have our methods of playing them. Secondly, The orchestra has been structured more like an orchestra of the time of Beethoven. These orchestras were not like modern ones. Pitch for instance was not as important. There were a number in use all across Europe. What were important were phrasing, bowing, and note length and speed. There were different techniques in use then. Thirdly, In this interpretation, Sir Roger Norrington has gone back to Beethoven's own manuscripts. From these he has taken the written and unwritten phrasing of an orchestra of the period. He has also used Beethoven's own metronome markings to regulate the tempo. This has led to some new interpretations. Faster slow movements than we are used to and slower... Read review
