Who could ever have believed that the Joshua Tree could be equaled? Certainly not me. I have friends who feel that Achtung Baby is just a little too different to even be compared to the Joshua Tree, but I beg to differ.
This album has been an unfailing source of entertainment and enjoyment to me since I purchased it nearly 10 years ago. It's hard to believe that it's been that long since it was released.
Achtung Baby contains many tunes about the complexity of relationships. Relationships would be a bore if they were too easy, and that comes across very clearly in this CD. In "Even Better Than The Real Thing," it is evident that this man is begging the object of his affection/ adulation to just give him one more chance to prove himself as a worthy lover. It is as though he has put this person on a pedestal, and most likely for the wrong reasons.
In the song, "One," the theme is hurt and the inability to make another person happy. This is so often a frustrating point in relationships, when one person is trying and trying but, in the end, it's all a moot point. No one person can make another happy. We have to be happy with ourselves first.
"Trying To Throw Your Arms Around The World" is a mesmerizing tune which trys to tell us what is and what is not important during periods of war and dissension.
This album's musical style is unique, hard-driving, and can initially be an assault on the ears. If one stops long enough to listen to the lyrics, however, he or she will find that there are some very brutally honest songs about the nature of human beings. Bono is a brilliant lyricist and a fantastic vocalist, which is very much evident on this groundbreaking album.

Great review ... "One" is my favourite on this disc. It must be really unpossible for another group or orchestra to copy those songs. The sensously weaving guitar / voice ... Brian Eno contributed some ethereal synth / keyboard suiting well the whole sound / expression. The only thing is ... and in my opionion similar on nearly each record of U2 ... that the good songs are really fantastic, but one can find some weaker tracks. But I won`t miss the good ones any more ... Tomas

My most-played CD of the 90s, and for a good 2 years it was hardly ever off my stereo. This album helped to change the face of mainstream contemporary music, along with their ZooTv tour and the general sense of adventure, intensity and mischief. Not only that, but 10 years on the songs still sound fabulous. Good review, though some more on the musical details would have made it even better! Cheers, J.

Another brilliant op on an excellent group. You are right about the Joshua Tree being such a great album too.
