Freedom is akon's third album, which certainly has a different twist to it compared to his last two previous attempts. To me his last two albums were more r'n'b/hip hop/rap. This new album sounds more commercial with a r'n'b/pop/dance feel to it. The album contains all 14 tracks which can be listened to over & over again as they are so catchy:
)Right Now (Na Na Na) - The lead track from the album which has stormed the charts all over the world. With its catchy chorus and holiday vibe this is a brilliant way to start the album.
)Beautiful - The first collaboration on the album with the help of Colby'O'Donis & Kardinall Offishall. Yet again a simple catchy chorus with the help of a great dance beat. To me the tune sounds like Alice Deejays hit 'Better off Alone'
)Keep You Much Longer - A nice summery song, great lyrics and an easy to listen to track.
)Troublemaker
- I really like this song and hope it will be released as a single in the future. It features female vocals from Sweet Rush and really gets you moving. Akon raps & sings on this track but i really love the female vocals on the chorus, when she sings "I thought you were a heartbreaker"
)We Don't Care - A more urban song on the album. This song is about meeting a girl in a club and dancing & kissing whilst not caring about the other people around you.
)I'm So Paid - The hip hop side to the album with Lil Wayne & Young Jeezy helping out on this track. The song exudes wealth & luxury whilst he sings about all the finer things in life. A good song to have blasting out of your car in the summer with your windows down.
)Holla Holla - Carrying on with the hip hop this song features T-Pain. A repetitive chorus but once it gets in your head you will be singing it all day. T-Pain is also good on the track with his interesting vocals.
)Against The Grain - This song has not fully grown on me yet. It's a slow song featuring Ray Lavender. Once you listen to the next track you will probably have forgotten that you listened to this one. Maybe with a few more listens i will like it but i could quite easily skip this one when listening to the album.
)Be With You - This song has a beach vibe to it. Nice lyrics about wanting to be with a girl no matter what other people say.
)Sunny Day - A reflective song on the album which features Wyclef Jean. Akon sings about getting out of the ghetto and making something of his life. It could be inspirational to some listeners.
)Birthmark - Another really nice reflective song on the album. This song made my friend cry because she really liked the sentiment about it. He also sings a rap in the middle of it about all the 12 months of the year.
)Over The Edge - As you will have guessed now the latter part of the album shows akon's slow songs in full capacity. This song to me can be skipped. It's an alright song but i wouldn't go out of my way to find the CD to put this track on.
)Freedom - I love this song. I went to South Africa last year for a month and for some reason this song just reminds me of the times we had there. It has like an african musical intro and then it builds up to an epic chorus. One of my favourites on the album.
)Clap Again - If you have the UK edition you will have been blessed by having this song as a bonus track. This is my favourite track on the whole album and of his entire career. I absolutely love the beat that plays throughout the whole song, it kind of hypnotises me into a trance and i can just lie down listening to this song over & over again. A fantastic way to end the album.
Overall i love this album, there is only 2 or 3 songs on this album i'm not a lover of but im sure with time they will grow on me. I think Akon has proved himself that he is one of the best male singers out there at the moment. Each album he has released he has tried new things and this one has definitely been pulled off with a great R'n'B/ Dance feel to it. I highly recommend this to anyone who is into R'n'B music.
