Review of Mahler: Symphony No 6 'Tragic' by berlioz Advantages: A most powerful and unique work in the annals of music Disadvantages: Will not appeal to the cutesy-cutesy people ...also hear the "fate" motif in a very subdued form as the movement dies away. - III. Andante moderato - Next we have the gentle Andante, arguably the best slow movement Mahler ever wrote (even better than the famous Adagietto of the Fifth Symphony). The strings play pianissimo in the middle and lower registers, creating a very soothing feeling after the preceding horrors. The key of E flat major (the key most remote from A) is very mellow, just like the "Alma" theme in the first movement: "plain" but in Mahler's hands becomes a skilled and eloquent composition. The orchestrations are magical, with dabs of wind color setting this or that point into higher relief. This is music full of Mahlerian major-minor ambiguities. As a whole the movement has a surprising harmonic sweep, its climax placed in the luminous E major, also bringing back... Incredible Review of Mahler: Symphony No. 5 by tbreeze Advantages: Excellent piece - real emotion Disadvantages: none ...It is hard to believe that Gustav Mahler was so unappreciated and often viewed as a conductor who occasionally wrote "overlong" symphonies. This work is certainly one of the greatest ever written and would certainly not look out-of-place along side works by masters like Beethoven and Mozart. People often do not like this symphony and others by Mahler, simply because they do not understand it. The entire work is a collection of emotions, as they were experienced by the composer. Therefore, to see the music properly, the listener must feel those emotions too. It is therefore impossible to approach the work from a critical and analytical point of view. The emotion that exists in the score alone is incredible. The adagietto, though often considered to be a calm and relaxing piece, is one of the most painful pieces to listen... Piano Concerto 8.550107 Review of Naxos - Paderewski by FullScore Advantages: Not offensive and well-played Disadvantages: Lacking musical value ...I’m a sucker for piano concertos, especially romantic ones, and I tried really hard with this one but no matter how many times I’ve listened to it I always reach the same conclusion – this is utter tosh. Vacuous does not come into it, and the orchestration is obviously a homage to Chopin’s by making sure that it is even less effective. It seems a bit pointless to comment on the performance and recording but at least I can report that they are up to Naxos' usual high standard - it's just rather a waste as the material isn't.
