tacking one or two great songs onto otherwise mediocre albums--so this 1993 best-of is perfect for consumers. It has all the good stuff, from the retro radio hour staples "Blister in the Sun" and "Gone Daddy Gone," plus the creepy murder-suicide story "Country Death Song," the should've-been-a-hit "American Music" and ephemera like live versions of "Add It Up" and "Kiss Off." With Gordon Gano's never-aging teen whine and a crack rhythm section, the Femmes have had brief moments as America's best rock & roll band. This collection captures some of them. --Steve Knopper

Advantages: It's happy and you don't mind hurting Disadvantages: The last tune leaves you in a dribbling mess, or should that be an advantage?
...with a single snare drum you couldn't really say that they have a punk sound. What they do have is more punk energy and emotion than a dozen modern punk bands rolled together. In the same way as the band 'Pavement', The ViolentFemmes somehow manage to exactly capture the feeling of some of the happiest moments of your life in musical form and then give them back to you without a second of shame.
The majority of the 10 songs on this album seem to be about that acheing moment of 'Why?' that you feel whenever someone you love hurts you for apparently no reason at all. Listening to this album is like a happy solution for the times that you just want to curl up and make it all go away. This is the kind of music that has industrial and metal fans really trying had to deny that they are effected by, but they still love it. Think 'Everybody Hurts' by REM...

...of improvisation, which adds even more so to the greatness of the song.
"You can all just kiss off into the air"
5.Add It Up
This is another one of the most popular songs by The ViolentFemmes and also one of my favourites. The lyrics are very self-pitying and the track could be described as a musical tantrum. The song starts with Gano's lonely drawl and is later accompanied by a very fast rock beat that gives you the urge to bang your head and stamp your feet.
"Why cant I get just one kiss
Why cant I get just one kiss
Believe me there'd be somethings that I wouldnt miss
But I look at your pants and I need a kiss"
6.Black Girls
Fantastic intro, with tame drumbeats and a handful of jazz. A great example of how punk, folk and jazz can be mixed together and provide a brilliant result. A rather experimental piece, with little lyrics but a great...

...The ViolentFemmes, a Milwaukee busking street band trio, emerged on the scene across the atlantic in 1983 with this self titled album.
The band being Gordan Gano who's vocally strained tirades combined with a low, unassuming, yet perfectly balanced electro-acoustic guitar ; The genius that is Brian Ritchie - a style of acoustic bass that became instantly recognisable in the VF set up; not only providing an awe inspiring rhythm and underpinning structure but also doubled as lead guitar with many notable bass breaks of Hendrix proportions and the almost military beat style of Victor De Lorenzo's with a major preference to snare drum abuse.
All 10 tracks of this debut album are of an unfathomable standard when set in the era in which they were penned and recorded...but to cover a few of personal notoriety:
Blister In The Sun: Its so...
