Advantages: Groundbreaking originality and really beautiful music Disadvantages: No Jimmy Chamberlain
...has the harder style of Adore with a strong techno beat but also that lighter, beautiful feeling that the rest of the album possesses. If you do only one thing after reading this review, go look up Pug on youtube or something. You'll be blwon away.
Track ten - The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete
"Dusty screams through doors and imaginary floors"
The lyrics in this song are immense, there truly ... ...with very pretty music; the type of music and vocals that you wouldn't mind listening to separately. Great singing from Corgan.
Track eleven - Annie-Dog
This song is started by short couples of piano chords. Followed by Corgans singing taking on a similar rythm easing in a very light drumming that buildsup slightly to adopt the same loose rythm. An easy listening song. Graet lyrics and extremely listenable.

This was the fourth studio album from the Smashing Pumpkins and in my view their greatest piece of work despite the fact that Jimmy Chamberlain was missing in making this album due to a drug problem.
Track One - To Sheila
A soothing song with some beautiful light guitar in the back ground. Corgan's voice is clam and relaxingand is a tribute to how far his voice has come. He can clearly sing alot better on this album. There is a slight intrusion by a banjo or something which helps reinforce the atmosphere of a sort of forlorn bliss. The song was written by Corgan for his mother who had died not long previously.
Track two - Ava Adore
This is the techno-rock that is so original to the Pumpkins at the time. The song has rich distorted guitar with a constant drum machine beat. The song is closer to the tone of some of the Pumpkins older stuff: Billy's whiney voice perfecrtly suited to the music he creates and contains a solo that many a Pumpkin fan will recognise as in the same trademark style the Pumpkins always use. The song is gritty with beautiful guitar strokes and a masterpiece in my opinion.
Track Three - Perfect
Considered to be a sequel to 1979 from Mellon Collie by Corgan. There is something rather similar in this song. It has that light hearted guitaring and faster drumming. This is rather an upbeat sounding track which is sung rather solemnly and some how it really works.
Track Four - Daphne Descends
Yet again we have that rich guitaring and if you find my description unsatisfying you only have to this to this music to really appreciate those sporadic chords that are in there that really bring the music so much beauty. This is rather a nice song, beautiful to listen to and sad in its way.
Track Five - Once Upon A Time
Like the title the music to this is song is rather cheery and fairy tale like. A great song, keeps a magical lighthearted feeling throughout and yet again we hear references to Corgan's dead mother.
Track Six - Tear
The opening to this song is played on guitars, violins, violas, what have you. It is a dark yet grand intro inticing you from the beginning. The music stops to only a light drumming and Corgan sings. Then the spoken "I saw you there" opens up the music again in great splendour. A darker, slightly heavier song but only in comparison to most of the other songs on the album. There seems to be alot of feeling in this song and the arrangement of the music is something to be admired.
Track Seven - Crestfallen
Starts with a light slowish piano intro and keeps that slow tempo throughout. If ever a song could define a world this song describes crestfallen, the lyrics portray such a feeling of no self worth and lost hope and the atmosphere is aided by light vocal harmonics during teh chorus. The piano interlude is brilliant and is worth remembering of itself.
Track eight - Appels and Oranjes
Another more techno styled song. Faster tempo in this song and a more upbeat song generally. The vocals are slightly distorted and there is a constant repititiv drumbeat that dominate through out. It is a very original song and very listenable.
Track nine - Pug
When I first bought this album, I listened to this song again and again and again. Even now when I put this album on I have to repeat this song and Tear a couple of times before moving on. This has a very techno beat to it but is also more of a guitar song much similar to the style created in Adore. There are quick guitar riffs in there that are simple and amazing the intro for example is groundbreaking I've never heard music like this album anywhere. If I could find a music like teh music in Pug there'd be no way I wouldn't buy it. It has the harder style of Adore with a strong techno beat but also that lighter, beautiful feeling that the rest of the album possesses. If you do only one thing after reading this review, go look up Pug on youtube or something. You'll be blwon away.
Track ten - The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete
"Dusty screams through doors and imaginary floors"
The lyrics in this song are immense, there truly is tale within there. It is a very pretty song with very pretty music; the type of music and vocals that you wouldn't mind listening to separately.
Track twelve - Shame
A slow song. Maybe not the most rememberable song from the album but nice to listen to. Great background music perhaps. I like it, I'll make that clear; I just don't have too much to say on it.
Track thirteen - Behold! The Nightmare.
Another song with rich lyrics and pretty light melancholy music. It is yet another sad song dedicated to Corgan's mother. There's ashort spoken interlude that is typical of Pumpkins but this one is quite childlike and delicate unlike the screamed Zero interlude. This eases into a short but rather trendy guitar solo before moving back to a faster version of the earlier music before ending with "The nightmare rides on..."
Track fourteen - For Martha
This song starts with a low piano intro that then changes to a lighter piano that is very appealing to listen to and skilful. The drums then break in to open way for the singing which is slow and well planned as it al comes together nicely. This is a rather sad song at parts. The song most clearly dedicated to Corgan's dead mother. There is a great long guitar solo in this song that every pumpkin's fan will enjoy
Track fifteen - Blank Page
Another piano and singing based song. Easy istening greatlyrics and lovely song.
Track 16 - 17
This isn't actually a song, it only lasts 17 seconds.
I love this album it is really original. There is nothing that sounds similar to this album and the Pumpkin's really built on this in Machina but I really think they let themselves down in making Zeitgeist. It make take awhileto really get into but once you do this album will entrance you forever.
Advantages: Good, well-balanced album Disadvantages: Seems slightly self-indulgent and a bit 'aren't we oh-so-arty' at times
I bought this album on impulse and 'on the cheap' and I have to say that to begin with I was quite disappointed. It seemed very different from the older Smashing Pumpkins albums that I knew, and I was ready to write it off as a waste of money.
For some reason, however, I carried on listening to it and gradually got into it. I found that once you get past the strange mix of their usual 'indie' style with the new electro-techno beats that filter through, ...

Advantages: very slow, mellow music Disadvantages: may be to slow for some
an other pumpkins album added to my collection and once again the disappointment is kept at bay by great music. this is deffinetly a lot slower than "mellon collie and the infinite sadness" which really is no let down (especially not when you want slow music). the opening track on the album, "to sheila", is such a soothing track and it must be said that this is really billy corgan at his best. the lyrics are incredible and really make you feel as ... ...by song upon song of very calming and sometimes sad music which is what gives this album its great mood. although the songs are fairly slow, they do have a very special side to them which is usually accompanied by very good background rhythms. the lyrics are performed excellently by billy corgan and are also very "deep"
the inlay and the whole cd itself is a lot darker in feel than what they are for "mellon collie and the infinite sadness" which ...

Advantages: classic pumpkin. Disadvantages: not enough mystery?
no, it does. it is a truly excellent album, although not quite in the same league as "mellon collie" or "siamese dream", i haven't heard a band produce two albums as good as that and follow them up with a completely different, piano driven work of genius like this. (balls of steel?). the lyrics seem slightly less oblique, with the exception of the utterly unfathomable "annie-dog", which think is my favourite from the album.
everything about the ... ...nasal sneer, the chillingly perfect melodies, the mystique... except for one thing. the absolute genius of jimmy chamberlain. he really made those other two albums what they were. he's a very special musician.
highlights?
"to sheila". drum machine and piano fight for supremacy, as guitar and breathy voice slide over the percussion. a brilliant low-key opener, and very un-pumpkin.
"ava adore". the single. gothic electronica. and it's just so infectious. ...

Advantages: well constructed musically. Disadvantages: can be a little dull at times.
Adore was not a commercial success when it was intitally released, however, the steps album was so If I was Corgan and Co' I wouldnt be too worried about that. This is a mellodic outpouring from the pumpkins, and is something that you can sit back and listen to. Although I actually fell asleep listening to this CD just the other day, I was tired to start with. At times Corgan's wining does get a little annoying, but if you cant cope with that then ... ...lacks rock elements somewhat, and I dont belive that it compares that favourably to Machinea. Buying this CD is not a waste of money, I actually quite like it, sometimes you need something a little more relaxed and that you can put on in the background, theres nothing grownd breaking here, perhaps something for fans only. If new to the Smashing Pumpkins, looks to the latest album first, then if you like that then this might be worth a look. ...

Advantages: One of the edgiest moodiest albums to date with such fantastic appeal Disadvantages: The song names are hard to remember because almost of all of them don't relate to the lyrics of the song
If you like alternative music, this album is one to add to your collection. It is one of the most brilliant albums I have ever heard. I could hear this one over and over again.
Although some of the lyrics in the album maybe considered disturbing, its always good to remember alot of the lyrics are metaphorical and are being used to express the depth of emotion or thought or anger.
The album is truly beautiful and comes across as so real. Not rubbish ... ...an album out to make some money. When you hear this album you know alot of time, love and effort has gone into putting this beautiful record together. If you're open minded about the beautiful ugly... this is an album to hear.... If you like alternative music especially during the early to mid 90's trust me you are missing out without this one.. go out and get it!! ...

Album Notes
Smashing Pumpkins: Billy Corgan, James Iha, D'Arcy. Additional personnel: Brad Wood (vocals, organ); Bon Harris (vocals, programming); Dennis Flemion, Jimmy Flemion (vocals); Joey Waronker, Matt Cameron, Matt Walker (drums). Engineers include: Brad Wood, Bjorn Thorsrud, Howard C. Willing. ADORE was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. In the wake of drummer Jimmy Chamberlin's departure, the Pumpkins have taken a giant step away from the grunge-flavored, turbo-powered alt-rock anthems that made them famous. On ADORE, Billy Corgan and company opt instead for a more scaled-down approach that relies heavily on acoustic instruments and ballads of love and longing. Corgan may still be expressing angst here, but he does it in an understated, romantic way, addressing matters of the heart with subtlety and maturity on tunes like "Shame" and "To Sheila." Don't take all this acoustic-based balladry (a path also explored by James Iha on his solo debut) as a sign that the band is out of touch with contemporary production trends, though. Bon Harris of Nitzer Ebb is on hand to add a sprinkling of electronica to the proceedings via his programming talents. His contributions, like much of ADORE itself, remains modestly unobtrusive, providing just the right underpinning for some of the tunes. As the album ends with a solo piano instrumental, we're reminded that Smashing Pumpkins are a band who refuse to ossify, constantly changing and evolving. ADORE is just one more leg of their continuing journey.
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (6/11/98, pp.115-116) - 3.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...a complete break with the past....dials down the volume to lullaby level....overflows with heartsick valentines. Corgan...sings with an almost androgynous delicacy, sometimes supported by little more than a piano or a guitar..." Entertainment Weekly (6/5/98, pp.78-79) - "...Corgan barely raises his voice to the angsty caterwaul that makes people either love him or hate him, but his voice and lyrics remain unsettled and unsettling. Pretty on the outside, the album is dark and obsessive beneath; let's call it passive-aggressive rock..." - Rating: B+
