Ali with a fab line up
Review of Running Free - Ali Campbell by
pixie65
Advantages: great selection of artists and classics
Disadvantages: one track a bit samey
...! - what a line up.
Beverley Knight, Lemur, Bitty McLean, Smokey Robinson, Katie Melua, Mick Hucknall, Robin Campbell and finally Aston 'family man' Barrett & Don Yute.
'" Tracks '"
Beverley Knight's clear harmony works magically around the octaves of Running Free with Ali reflecting both perfect pitch and fast rhythms.
What a beautiful version of this classic. (4 mins)
Ali's solo of Hold Me Tight is one of my favourites of the whole CD. For all UB40 fans this is the 'real good old stuff' that take you back to when the gang appeared on Top of the Pops. Reggae beats keeping that constant flow with interjections of Ali's powerful harmony pleadings and 'baba babas'. (4 mins)
I have never really thought of Ali and Lemur singng together as a great match. How wrong I was. Their voices almost sound as one during the fabulous 'I'll Be Standing By...

Adrenaline? I don't see any evidence..
Review of Adrenaline - Deftones by
Chalk
Advantages: The song bored is the highlight; and from here onwards the name is apt.
Disadvantages: Too typical, angsty, 'life suxxorz' lyrics, not well thought out, to be blunt, it's pretty crappy.
...and has the quiet-loud phase-thing, again. The definitive track of the album is probably the first, as it has something to it. Perhaps 7 Words is a good example of the albums' overall content, with whisper-like vocals informing us 'I've been humming too many words, got a weak self esteem that's been stomped away' occuring before exploding into a blast of angst. On listening, I feel it isn't that great. 'You don't Know me, shut up, you don't know me' lyrics don't really do it for me now that I'm not a bullied 13 year old, I guess.
The songs are relatively samey and I don't listen to this record as it is too grinding, and I feel it is the band trying to find their feet. In my opinion, 'Around The Fur' would be a better purchase, as 'Be Quiet and Drive' is the song that most captures the essence of this band, and the lyrical quality...

Burn Me Now !
Review of Burning Red, The - Machine Head by
woodsikov
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
...This is a slice of adrenalin overdrive from those pumping purveyors of metal music, Machine Head. If you don't know Machine Head, buy this now and glory in the energy and ecstacy that this music will produce in you. 'The Blood, The Sweat, The Tears' will reverberate through you and resonate with your whole body. Chant along to 'From This Day' and then immerse yourself in the pumping rhythm of 'Exhale The Vile'. There is also an interesting and unexpected cover version of 'Message In A Bottle' to give you a little respite from the non-stop aggression of the rest of the album.
Weld this into your CD player now....
