This is a review of the truly superb CD and DVD of Jean Michel Jarres 'Aero' which will be in split into 2 parts on this same page... i will start with the CD, then the DVD.
Firstly i would like to offer a little background to the great man and his featured recordings as i find this relevant in order to help anyone who is unfamiliar with JMJ appreciate and understand this specific recording a little better.
Jean Michel Jarre (JMJ) was born on the 24th August 1948 in Lyon, France.
His father (Maurice Jarre) was a very talented composer himself who helped write music themes for 'Lawrence of Arabia' and 'Dr Zhivago' to name but two.
JMJ is in the Guiness book of records several times but perhaps most notably for his live Paris show where he performed to close to 2 million people at the Arche de la Défense, he is clearly no ordinary musician, at worst he is an under appreciated genius of synthesiser music, at best he is sublime in his craft, and unequalled by none.
So then, thats a little background of the man, now what about his music?
Well, i imagine most people would instantly recognise some of JMJ's tracks
if they happened to hear them, they may not know that he wrote them but they would recognise them nonetheless, whether this be in supermarkets, in elevators or simply whilst holding on the phone... sadly this is how alot of people associate JMJ's music and as such despite being massively popular world wide, he may not have 'touched' as many people as he might have liked, or perhaps in the way that he would have preferred - enter Aero.
Aero is a combination of new tracks and old tracks, but in the case of the old tracks everything is re-recorded note for note (all by himself) and captured in 5.1 surround sound, he also did all the producing work for this new album by himself, no small feat.
So who would want to buy Aero when they may already have some of his work by virtue of his greatest hits CD's?
To be perfectly honest you will need either a PC or home music system with 5.1 surround sound support and the neccesary speaker setup to fully appreciate this CD/DVD, this isnt compulsory as the recording will play just fine in stereo (so will the DVD) but to get the absolute best out of this product you do need a 5.1 surround sound setup, i didnt have one and i bought mine simply so i could get the most out of this CD... i wouldnt expect many others to do the same, but i am a massive fan of JMJ and i wanted to get the most out of this masterpiece, all tracks were recorderd in 96hz/24 bits at JMJ's own studio in France.
Aero is a fully immersive experience where the listener will be enveloped into a world of audio never before experienced, every note, every key, every moment will all be heard around you 'swishing' and 'teasing' your senses thru 360° and taking you to a musical heaven of pure Jarre nirvana, this is the very first CD of its type ever created and what a way to introduce us to it, this isnt supermarket music, this is perfect perfection at its most pure timelessness.
Tracks 1, 3, 7 and 12 are all new recordings, the others are re-recorded specifically for this album.
Now the DVD.
Supplied with the Aero CD you also get a DVD, the DVD itself consists of 26 tracks (a full listing will be at the bottom of this review).
Now the DVD is where things get a little weird, you may expect to see the man himself performing Oxygene or Equinoxe to hundreds of thousands of people at the Pyramids in Giza... well you would be perhaps a little dissapointed or at least somewhat surpised or even confused with what you see before you as the DVD starts...
In a nutshell the DVD starts and you are greeted to what may initially seem as a peculiar kind of staring contest by a set of female eyes (i told you it was a little weird) the woman is French actress Anne Parillaud and was filmed in one continous take (with no breaks) of Anne listening to the DVD at the same point as yourself, the recording lasts a full 75 minutes and is unusual to say the least, the option to disable Anne staring at you whilst you are listening can be disabled if you prefer, but for novelty purposes (at least) you should experience the visuals just once in its entirity.

I paid £11 for this CD/DVD and can highly recommend it to anyone vaguely interested in synthesiser music.
The inlay card of the CD is a montage of various fans and thier submitted pictures to JMJ, he acknowledges some of the better (or perhaps more wierd) ones in the supplied inlay booklet.
That pretty much concludes my review for JMJ's Aero, the following site links may prove useful to anyone wishing to know more...

Advantages: Some new tracks. Enhanced old tracks - then of course there's the DVD Disadvantages: Not much new for something purporting to be a new album
