Introduction Affirmation ~ yet another work of genius from this groundbreaking band. Affirmation, following their debut album had to be good; it had to be flawless if it was to be as good as there first. What good would it do the band to release a real let down, after the enormous build up the fans had been given. Part of the key to this albums chart topping success was the huge gap between the release of this and there first. Fans of the band were left desperate for something new, and so of course when the opportunity arose to get something new, Savage Garden fans invaded record shops everywhere.
Comparisons This album has a brand new style in comparison with their old album, far more bouncy and thus more attractive to the younger generation. This tactic worked as masses of new savage fans flocked to buy the new album. This album seems to be related to real life far more closely than their first, it seems to approach love in a new way too. This unique style is what kept the band going.
Songs Ok, lets forget all that for a moment and have a look at the Songs:
1) Affirmation---- The key
album song, this song does for the album the same thing that Truly Madly Deeply did for their first album. This is a real feel good about your self, heart-warming song. A fabulous track to lift any ones spirits. A great motivational song. 2) Hold me---- A slow and moving song, based on the break down of love and the feelings twisted up inside. A song not for any one feeling depressed, this one will set you off crying. This song is a little slow and thus can be quite depressing. 3) I knew I loved you----This song is the complete opposite to “Hold me” and acts as a great contrast between songs when listening to the album. Also about love, but more aimed at the fact that there is someone out there waiting for you and that love will be found if only you give it enough time. 4) The Best Thing---- This is a much faster song and gets the atmosphere going again after the slow anti climax after Affirmation. Just enough to motivate you into stop you feeling sorry for your self, giving you the energy you need to face the world. 5) Crash and Burn---- This song to my mind seems to hold great meaning, hidden within the murky depths of this song lies a message. I do believe that this message is put across without you even realising it. The song is based on a different type of love, the love for a friend or a family member. Communication seems to be another basis for this song as is evident in the video. 6) Chained to You---- This is a pure work of genius, the savage garden boys I have to say excelled themselves when writing this song. It has a fantastic beat to it with a brilliant rhythm. This song attacks the “Love at first site” type idea; the sublime lyrics illustrate this perfectly. 7) The Animal song---- this song seems to equal Affirmation in style and content, This is a very meaningful song and seems to give the idea of complete freedom, it also puts out the basis for being at one with nature. 8) The lover after me----This song is about a past relationship that you have broke from but see reminders around and it haunts you. This is a very emotional song very intense and very meaningful. I like this song but it is still depressing. This does however seem to be a regular occurrence with the Savage Garden Boys so if you don’t like depressing songs why are you reading this? 9) Two Beds and A Coffee Machine---- This song has possibly the strongest lyrics I have ever heard the band use, this use of words to convey the hellish way someone was treated by an abusive partner is very effective. This is a very tactful approach to a very touchy subject. 10) You Can Still Be Free---- This song I can only describe as sublime, It seems to try and convey the fact that you are in control of your life and that you make of your own life what you want. It implies that even though things seem bad, they can always be fixed. 11) Gunning Down Romance----This song seems very bitter towards love, the entire basis of the album falls apart at this song, and this creates an untouchable atmosphere that is totally unique. Some of the harsh and repulsive lyrics show the shear scale of how bad love can be and how much pain and suffering it can cause. 12) I don’t know You Anymore---- This song focuses on the other side of a relationship, how a partner reacts to you. The feelings educed when you come home to find all your belongings packed in a suitcase because your partner doesn’t want you anymore.
D/C’s Final Thought This is an album that shows real effort and hard work was put into it, It is an amazing album by an amazing band. The shear amount of work that must have gone into this album must be astronomical as very few bands covey this kind of out standing work.
