African Spirit - Soweto Gospel Choir

Advantages: The broadness of the music kept my interest throughout, they enjoyed being there!
Disadvantages: None for me.

...As much as people like to mock my part of London, it does have some good points, and one of the diamonds in the rough is The Fairfield Halls. An eclectic mix of ?artistes? have passed through the corridors of this Concert Hall since it opened in 1962, ranging from Robert Cray to Mott the Hoople. A quick check of their website tells me that both The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Curtis Stigers are also due to perform here in the near future. Okay, so it?s not exactly the O2 arena, or even the Brixton Academy, but it?s not bad. It was here that I came to see The Soweto Gospel Choir recently. My friend had been more keen than I to attend, but I was interested enough to agree to go. I didn?t appreciate, until we saw the concert, that the Choir had such diverse musical scope. Advantages: An uplifting tale from a continent usually only described by its problems.

...As misery memoir piled upon misery memoir and we were obliged, even those who chose not to read the genre, to bear witness to the appalling things some parents are capable of doing to their own children, I began to wonder if the happy childhood had gone the way of Spangles and club trips to the seaside: things I knew had existed once upon a time. My overwhelming thanks then to Robyn Scott (and publishers Bloomsbury) for restoring my faith. Twenty Chickens for a Saddle is subtitled "the Story of an African Childhood", but more than that it is the story of a recent and happy childhood. For that alone it would be worth the read. Of course there are trials and tribulations. Idylls don't actually exist, all children have their difficulties. This being Africa the everyday upsets are of a kind that might well have permanently...
