Afro-Cuban Rhythms - Robin Jones/Bosco De Oliveira

Advantages: A few really good tracks, some De La Soul tunes you have never heard before
Disadvantages: The album has no flow, a few weak remixes

...the intro this track kicks the album off. A funky drum line grabs you up into quick step rhythm. Dove, Pos and Mase take turns on the mic and then rap in harmony. The lyrics are about the groups bond. "Somewhere in this hip hop soul community Was born three; Mase, Dove and me And that's the magic number" This is one of De La Soul's best tracks and many of you can probably vaguely remember hearing this at some point in your life. It is poppy, up-beat and hard not to like. I would rip it! Potholes in my Lawn (Live from NYC) 2:36~ This is a previously unreleased live recording taken in 1996 from the Tramps nightclub*. Live is not a strong enough word for the energy popping off the speakers with this track. Advantages: Lots of lovely versions of some Porter Classics
Disadvantages: A couple of bad notes, and if you don't like Porter, you won't want this album

...It is the rare occasion that finds me buying a movie soundtrack. The main reason for this is that many have some silly background music tracks added to them that frankly, aren't all that fantastic musically, and were probably added just to have enough sound-bites to justify putting out an album. Oh, sure, the soundtrack for "Good Morning Vietnam" is one exception - but who doesn't enjoy hearing Robin Williams doing his run-off-at-the-mouth shtick in addition to some great Rock & Roll? Another exception is this CD - the soundtrack for De-Lovely. You see, from the moment I saw this movie, I knew I was going to buy the soundtrack. I've always loved Cole Porter songs, and this was a way to get a nice collection while also getting an interesting combination of artists performing them. Here's what I think of this CD. Advantages: Easy listening, nice to relax to

To some, 'jazz' is a dirty word, conjuring up images of men in polo-neck shirts and dark glasses who say 'Nice' a lot and generally just make a noise. This however is not that kind of jazz; instead, it's from an era of jazz that is much more laid back, friendly and easily accessible to most people - a style of music that I can only describe as 'vintage'. If you're not a fan of popular music prior to the 1960's this probably isn't an album you'd enjoy; however if you like the style and simplicity of "vintage" music, you'll probably appreciate this album.
