The Supremes were now Motown's very own ambassadors. They were the labels most visible act and were instrumental in helping change and shape the whole face of black music. They humanised the face of black music if you like, becoming accessable and popular just as much with whites as they were blacks. In Diana Ross's spectacular 1987 Emmy-award nominated television special, Red Hot Rhythm & Blues where Diana made a commendable stand for her heritage and traced the origins of black music, Diana spoke about how in the 1950's, black music was referred to as "Race music" and that (appallingly) black artists were exploited and ripped off left, right and centre where record companies would use a black artists voice and then disgustingly have a white artist perform it on stage or television. I bought my copy of The Free Story in the early 1990's from the VIRGIN store in Oxford Street, London. Format 1 X CD - on special offer originally released 1973.
***ABOUT FREE***
Inception 1968, the band consisted of Paul Rodgers (vocals, rhythm guitar), Paul Kossoff (lead guitar), Andy Fraser (bass) and Simon Kirke (drums) and christened FREE by Alexis Korner after a band he called Free at Last with ginger Baker and Graham Bond. Signed to Island records, debut album "Tons of Sobs". 1970 played the Isle of Wight, 1972 Albert Hall. Toured USA, Japan, Australia. Final album "Heartbreaker". In the following years Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke went on to form Bad Company. While Andy Fraiser teamed up with Chris Spedding to form Sharks. Paul Kossof formed his own band Back Street Crawler and unfortunately died of a heart attack...
