Advantages: Good cross section of artist work Disadvantages: not to everyones tastes
...A cracking album from one of the u.k top folk artists. This album shows a true cross section of work from Bert's repertoire. Personally, i like every track on the album and as a fellow musician Bert's arrangements are exceptionally good and complex! There are the traditional tracks like "Black waterside" (Led Zeplin used Bert's arrangement for one of their own tracks,) aswell as reading of "Nottamun Town" and the murder ballad "Bruton Town."
If you like your english folk music then you can't go wrong with one of the best examples of folk guitar. This album is a mixture of self-penned songs, trad folk and examples of the tunes that were taken into his band The Pentangle.
I have been a fan of Bert's for years and this album is one of the best examples of his career spanning the last 40 yrs....

Advantages: The voice of an Angel ; Title track being one of the best folk rock songs Disadvantages: Some weak tracks ; Not on the same par as Fairport Convention or Fotheringay
...traditional folk song which is held in high esteem as a cover choice for various folk related artists such as: Led Zeppelin's 'Black mountain side' and the best being BertJansche's cover Sandy pulls it off in angelic style. It does draw the odd similarity with previous Sandy covers such as 'The ballad of the easy rider' from Fairport's 'Unhalfbircking' album because it's tempo is so largo. A sublime performance.

We did lie in sport and play,
When this young man arose and he gathered his clothes,
Saying, Fare thee well today''.'
3. SEA CAPTAIN - 3:08
Perhaps the most 'bare' song on the album, Sandy's vocals are intense and untouched with only a backing drum and mellow guitar to accompany the beauty of Denny's voice. I love this song, it's just such a deserved piece of relaxed folk rock which...

His face took on a look of shock. He cradled the guitar in his arms as if it were a curvaceous woman, and after a moment of silence and a deep breath whispered to the crowd, “You always hurt the one you love.”
I have never forgotten the obvious deep affection he expressed for his instrument as he examined it for nicks. To this day I refer to my own guitars as the lovers that keep me warm at 1 a.m. when my wife doesn...
