Advantages: Really nice collection of misc/b-sides and unreleased songs.Lyrically v.good and musically catchy. Disadvantages: Hard to place this album in terms of genre/era/date-has a disorientating feel.
After they split up, Crowded House decided they had some really strong B-Sides and extra songs that didn't really get the credit they deserved. They decided to reform to make Afterglow-the home of the B-Sides and unreleased songs that couldnt fit onto any other albums.

Although this album is really for the die hard fans who will know where to place this album and really appreciate the completion of sets of themes in the flow of their album history, this album can also appeal to new fans. Although the album flows really well it does sometimes give you this feeling that it doesnt really know where its going or where it has been and it feels hard to assign an era/genre or date this album. This could be because most of the material was recorded between 1985 and 1994.

Summary: New and old fans will like it just the same.
Advantages: Rare music, high standard Disadvantages: none i could see
As you may have guessed by now, i am a very big fan of Neil Finn, and have been recently searching back through time, to find some of his rare cd's. It seems a few weeks back, i made a breakthrough when i found this cd. From what i gathered from the "Interview with Neil Finn", which is the second cd, this album was made up, partially of B sides, and with songs that Didnt quite make albums like "woodface", and "Together Alone". These were all songs ... ...time. Having listened through the cd a few times, and gone over the interview cd, it seems there are a few personal songs from Neil Finn on this cd. Songs like "I love you Dawn", which was written for his wife, and "Lester", written shortly after an incident which envolved his dog. Quality music again, with the help of the exceptionally talented Mark Hart, bringing Keyboards, Guitars, and Harmony to the band.
I did find that the cd was great value ...

Album Notes
AFTERGLOW is a collection of previously unissued studio recordings. Crowded House includes: Neil Finn (vocals, guitar); Nick Seymour (bass); Paul Hester, Peter Jones, David Hepworth (drums). Producers: Mitchell Froom, Youth, Crowded House. Engineers include: Tchad Blake, Greg Hunter, Chris Corr. Recorded between 1985 & 1994. Includes liner notes by David Hepworth. All tracks have been digitally remastered. When New Zealand's Split Enz broke up in 1985, the Finn brothers took decidedly different paths. Elder brother Tim married actress Greta Scacchi while going the solo route while Neil founded The Mullanes, who eventually became Crowded House. Following its wildly successful 1986 debut, this Kiwi threesome squeezed out nearly a decade's worth of smart guitar pop reminiscent of The Beatles, the Kinks, and Squeeze before calling it quits in 1996. This compilation of 13 refurbished and/or remastered tracks consists of stray B-sides and half an album's worth of unreleased songs originally recorded for 1991's WOODFACE. Early tracks include "Recurring Dream," a chiming, pre-Crowded House number, and the wah-wah guitar-soaked "Left Hand," a loose workout spiked by some rollicking piano. Neil Finn's hand firmly steers the band's creative tiller through seas of love and pathos with inspiration ranging from his wife (the melodically rich "I Love You Dawn"), to his dog (a poignant demo of "Lester"). The only non-Finn song is drummer Paul Hester's zany, TV-obsessed "My Telly's Gone Bung." "Help Is Coming," an impressive slice of dream-pop from the band's last demo session, provides the perfect epilogue for this collection of melodic manna.

Q (3/00, p.118) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...a reminder that [they] were more than the sum of their parts....it's [Neil] Finn's songs that stick in the memory, but it was the playing and arrangements that enabled those songs to soar....they were built to last."
