... To define the overall sound, you have to take the main body of the album, and then combine it with the lead single The Age of The Understatement. In doing that, you find an album that is over the top, with a little bit of spaghetti western styling, in a bubble of 60s Kitsch.

surprise that The Age of the Understatement, the first side project from Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys, should appear to no great fanfare. The Last Shadow Puppets are Turner and Miles Kane, formerly of Monkeys tourmates The Little Flames and now in the Rascals, aided by producer (and here, drummer) James Ford, also of Simian Mobile Disco. Inspired by the widescreen orchestral Sixties pop of Scott Walker and legendary arranger David Axelrod, they enlisted the London Metropolitan Orchestra under the aegis of Canadian Owen Pallett (aka Final Fantasy and an erstwhile member of the Arcade Fire's string section). The result is entirely successful, owing as much to the romanticism of Richard Hawley and the eclectic approach of the Coral as any sixties precursors. The thundering title track is pure Scott though, "I Don't Like You Anymore" is twisted pop in the best Cosmic Scouse tradition and the beautiful "Meeting Place", brilliantly enhanced by Pallett's orchestration, already sounds like an old classic. "Standing Next to Me" is genuinely exciting, "Calm Like You" is a new take on Turner's familiar style while "The Chamber" even sees him crooning. The Age of the Understatement is a fine, convincing album that proves Turner's talent is truly adaptable and marks Kane out as a talented songwriter too. --Steve Jelbert

Advantages: A different sound as far as Indie Rock is concerned Disadvantages: Track listing seems a bit out of order
...with the lead single The Age of The Understatement. In doing that, you find an album that is over the top, with a little bit of spaghetti western styling, in a bubble of 60s Kitsch.
It's a firm album, really. Alex Turner's vocals compliment the backing from Miles. The guitars do wonders for the songs in their relative simplicity, especially in being combined with an orchestral backing throughout. It makes it sound like a plausible set of James Bond ...

Awesome Album! Review ofAge Of The Understatement, The - Last Shadow Puppetsby
jeniilouise
Advantages: Great unique indie rock crossover Disadvantages: Only a disadvantage if you don't like their style
...first song on it, 'The Age Of The Understatement' having seen it on music channels and then went mad trying to find out who it was!
All the tracks certainly do have that similarity about them which I think is because of Alex Turner (the lead singer)'s very distinctive voice. However, their songs don't all sound the same and are all different.
They are classed as 'indie rock' and this does suit them. I don't actually like any indie music really ... ...again, if you didn't like them that doesn't mean you won't like this album!
Generally a very good album, I was hooked with just The age of the understatement (song) before the album, but once you've listened to them again you really are addicted to their unique indie/rock sound! ...

Advantages: Another portion of music from Alex Turner Disadvantages: Doesn't have that 'catchyness' that the Arctic Monkeys has...
...The Age Of The Understatement is the debut album from The LastShadowPuppets; a side project of Alex Turner of The Arctic Monkeys and Miles Kane of The Rascals...one you may well have heard of, but one you may not have!!
The Age of the Understatement was released in the UK on 21 April 2008, going straight to number one in the UK Albums Chart...the hype and success surrounding it was for the most part due to Turner's role in the band. The likes of Radio 1 put the debut single straight into it's A-list, the likes of the NME waxed lyrically over their arrival...but was it worth the hype??
Well first of all, the two met when Kane's former band The Little Flames supported the Arctic Monkeys during their 2005 & 2007 UK tours. Kane also played guitar on "505", the closing track of the second Arctic Monkeys album "Favourite Worst...

Advantages: More music for fans of the band members, decent album overall Disadvantages: inconsistent, different to what you'd expect from the group
...The LastShadowPuppets is a 3 piece indie rock band fronted by Arctic Monkeys lead singer, Alex Turner. His sideline group is made up by James Ford on Drums and Miles Kane on Bass if i remember rightly. Both of these musicians met Alex Turner when Miles Kane's other band, 'The Rascals' supported the Arctic Monkeys.
The album is called 'The Age of The Understatement' and consists of 12 Tracks and runs to almost 35 minutes. Fans of either band will have to be open-minded as The LastShadowPuppets do seem to be a little more downbeat than Arctic Monkeys and more contemporary and conventional than The Rascals.
The Tracks
[Track 1 - The Age of The Understatement]
The album screeches into an early crescendo with its title track, also a prominent yet simple bassline present early on. It may lead some Arctic Monkeys fans...

Additional notes
Album Notes: The result of a collaboration between Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner and lead singer of The Rascals Miles Kane, The Last Shadow Puppets' debut release is a predictably epic affair. The title track single is a cinematic patchwork of Morricone-esque themes and rhythmic motifs, dashed off with the sullen Northern wit we've come to expect from Turner. With strings arranged and conducted by Owen Pallett (otherwise known as Final Fantasy), 'The Age Of The Understatement' is a musical departure for Turner and Kane, taking in influences such as Scott Walker and David Bowie.
