Album Notes: Personnel includes: June Tabor (vocals); Nic Jones (guitar, fiddle). Unlike some folk singer, June Tabor possesses a style that is largely free of ornamentation and enunciates well, making her easily accessible to a wide audience. Although later albums from Tabor saw her developing a "chamber folk" style to accompany her interpretations of traditional and contemporary songs, her earliest performances were unaccompanied. Her 1976 debut album, AIRS & GRACES, is her least adorned: half the material is performed unaccompanied. "Queen Among the Heather" was learnt from the singing of Belle Stewart, one of her influences. Her version of "Reynardine" is highly regarded and makes for interesting comparison to Fairport Convention's folk-rock version. The song that attracted the most attention at the time was "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" by Scots-born, Australia-based Eric Bogle. This moving account of the Gallipoli landings and their aftermath, as recalled by a crippled soldier, is bursting with barely restrained emotion, and concludes with some softly intoned lines from "Waltzing Matilda." The rest of the songs are given spare accompaniment by Nic Jones (guitar, fiddle) or Jon Gillaspie (keyboards, woodwind), and range from the traditional "While Gamekeepers Lie Sleeping" to John Tams' account of a departing funfair "Pull Down Lads."
Advantages: Brilliant choice of material, expertly performed Disadvantages: None
...It would be difficult to find a better traditional British folk record than this. JuneTabor's career was at its artistic peak when she recorded this in 1983, and in my opinion her voice has never come across on record as good as this, either before or since.
She has achieved a fine balance of traditional and contemporary (songs by Bill Caddick, Lal Waterson and Joni Mitchell) material, and even where the songs weren't written especially for her, she makes it sound as if they were.
The opener, trad song "The Month of January" sets the standard: Tabor's vocals over delicate, unobtrusive background instruments - a major plus factor for the entire disc.
The modern songs, "The Scarecrow" and "She Moves Among Men" are haunting both musically and lyrically with their powerful evocations of abuse and neglect. On the latter the piano...

Advantages: Classy, cultural and (at the moment) cheap. Disadvantages: The current economic situation continues to plague the nations spirit.
...3.5 times stronger. This situation has devastated many of BA's middle class as foreign banks like HBSC, Citibank and Boston Bank refuse to give customers access to their savings. As a result the financial heart of BA's is awash with battered metal shutters and a constant barrage of vitriol from its once affluent customers.
This has heralded uneasy times for the city with noisy protests an almost daily occurrence. So while backpackers get to see what BA has to offer you feel she is not her true self. A large proportion of Portenos (port city dwellers) have being drained of their zest for life and the recovery will doubtlessly take years.
Buenos Aires is by far the biggest city in Argentina with 13 million people (Cordoba the countries second city has only 1 million). It's sprawling city centre, known as the Microcentro, is defined...

Advantages: CHEAP Disadvantages: not much room IF you are tall
...Read some not so great reviews before flying with air transat so I was a bit worried but there was no reason for it! Both flights were great, left on time, food was edible and staff was friendly!
I would highly recommend reserving a seat (even though it costs $20) unless you want to be stuck in the middle seat for 8 hours! I was upset when I found out there were no window seats left (even when checking in 4 hours early!) but was able to convince the boarding crew to let me know who had not showed up for the flight for a window seat and had a whole row to myself. Leg room was minimal.... if you are tall/fat it might not be very comfy! I'm short & skinny so I was fine :)
Food there was dinner (pasta, was good once I added the whole packet of salt & pepper) and a muffin in the morning which were okay. Food back was chicken & rice...
